Mark, I looked at that but was not sure if it was a crack.

Bruce, the car is listed at almost $37K which is up there for what looks like an unrestored Monte.  Most of what I am seeing would be easily corrected by the seller to make the car a bit more attractive.  Here are some of the things I saw:  The rear 72 trim looks like there are some scratches and dents.   The rocker panel trim on both sides look to be attached with screws rather than hidden clips.  Trunk key emblem is faded and pitted. Chrome around around the right front turn signal looks pitted.  Passenger front fender extension paint chipped upper corner near hood.  Grill Emblem badly faded.  The grill needs to be detailed by painting the inside of the boxed areas.  Hood Emblem looks faded and maybe some pitting.  Both door panels are screwed on at the bottom (this would not be so noticeable if if they were spaced the same distance on both the passenger and driver side  and the same number of screws used.)  Two of the window crank knobs have turned brown.  The silvering around all of the dash gauges look to be scratched and worn away.  Driver seat back pivot arm cover is missing.  Passenger seat back pivot cover is missing.  Aftermarket radio is ok but not if the dash has been cut to install.  Scratches in the plastic under the center air conditioning vents.  Ash tray looks to be scratched or paint chipped off.  Peeling paint in engine compartment on the frame.  To me the engine compartment looks very cluttered with too much aftermarket add-on's which takes away from how it could look.

Bruce, you asked for examples.  Not to pick the car apart too much but if you were thinking about buying it and that is why you asked "for example" I wanted to share why I felt it was priced way too high.

No harm or criticism meant… Most of us here struggle to repair our toys and we learn from each other …. I'd much rather fix it and use the knowledge of the many members here who probably have made the same common mistakes over the years…..  The biggest mistakes I've made is paying someone to make mistakes and break my toys…. You're invited to join us … Best $25 bucks you'll ever spend…  BTW… I was born and raised In Jacksonville way back in 1941….. You guys have a great Governor….

none taken, i guess i did not expect to spend as much as i have. first guy that looked at it was stuck on fuel wanted to rebuild the carb at 4-500 and i still would have had the same problem. i appreciate the invite but am selling the monte and moving on. guess me and old cars were not meant to be!!

Stumped two mechanics… ?   Interesting. A good mechanic would have looked inside the distributor thingy first.

no, both thought it was fuel related, after digging the 2nd found and fixed the issue. i always try to stay positive and not judge people i dont know

thank you for the responses, fuel line was laying directly on the manifold that was fixed, vacuum line was left off carb, that was fixed better but still missing a bit when floored, distributor is next , then maybe new spark plug wires we shall see!

update it was a cracked distributor and split rotor runs perfect now up for sale! thanks for the help!

    Fellow Monte Lovers,

Bought my first Monte (72), and can’t find anyone to work on it, went to one place and spent 4K and been going back consistently because things still aren’t fixed. Anyone know of a good mechanic in the south east region? I’m in South Carolina…example nothing on my dash works and I was told there isn’t a way to fix it?? I also attached what was done so far, but I’ll add most things are still broken.

try google "classic car mechanic near me" go thru all reviews, look for car shows near you go there and ask the car owners where they go. i had the same issue as you and the same year car 8k later shes all fixed but more than i wanted to spend. there are plenty of great (and smart) people on this site that can and will help you. i dont know how much or how far you want to go with this but always ask questions, all the items on your list are fixable but you must find a person that only works on classic cars.good luck, keep posting updates!!

i have a 1972 monte carlo with an after market 454 the serial numbers on the motor dates it between 1976-1978 and it seems to have stumped 2 mechanics. after a short warm up car will run perfect at 30- 40 mph any attempt to go faster motor will sputter and stall, also when floored no response at all, if i let off the gas it will return to normal. have a holly 4bl that has not been rebuilt, yet. gas in tank is new and has stabilizer added. any suggestions would be welcome.

My situation was similar. I bought a low mileage 402 that was about as stock and untouched as it gets. I went for a ride in the car before it was removed and it ran strong and smooth. While it was on my engine stand I pulled the valve covers to clean everything up and found bent pushrods, a ruined guide plate and rocker.. so I did a leakdown test to find that it had bigger issues. Pulled the heads, bent valves and even mashed pistons from the valves hitting. One piston having darn near a valve relief forged into it from a valve hitting. From there I just tore it all down, but I regret it as the bottom end was flawless.

thank you, i went in to the shop today they showed me all the damaged parts i guess it is possible bottom of mine is flawless as well, at least its done and done right they explained to me how lucky i was to catch it now instead of blowing the motor

It's hard to say, a motor can seem to run just fine and when you tear into it you find problems that seem strange such as slightly bent or worn parts. They have been running just fine the way they are but are showing signs of wear. Some precision parts can wear a little and run just fine but upon tear down will need to be replaced. Some parts, seals and gaskets need to be replaced with ANY amount of wear. I hope I explained it right.

    thank you!

  10. i have noticed there are a lot of mechanical minded people on this site i have a question from someone who is not. i own a 1972 chevy monte carlo with a 454(not original motor) ran like a beast, no knocks, no miss, idle smooth. noticed an oil leak from the head gasket area. when i took it in the mechanic told me it was leaking from the head gasket, i could see it on the lift.when he pulled the heads off he found a glob of silicone to hide the leak (not found on my original  inspection) also was told heads need to be machined to make the seal even. today i get a call telling me some rocker arms needed to be replaced valves needed to be done and some push rods were bent. my question is how would the car run so good with all this wrong? the shop is highly recommended this just does not make sense to me. any help would be appreciated
