  1. I got them from summit, I see them all over the net under names Speed master, procomp, eBay etc.... They appear to be well built, I test fitted them before I went any further. The plastic/metal/aluminum mashup bushing design is awkward, bulky and clumsy but fine me... for anyone that accumulates a lot of miles I think the bushing setup should be replaced with a tried and true design. I’m unsure of the quality of the ball joints.
as for installation they fit about as good as expected for the price.  Just slightly worse than the Speedtech arms I installed in a 71 chevelle a few years ago but 90% cheaper so no complaints at all.EA6FB178-801A-4A7A-ACF4-060615555ACE.thumb.jpeg.77156efb56a1039411bd66fb45241b6b.jpegthe transmission is patiently waiting to be yanked... but aches and pains are priority.

I like to stand back and listen to an "expert" point out stuff to another person about my car as well. You know, two guys talking and the one providing all kinds of false info about my car and the way the car should be. Just proves that half the folks you know are below average and always makes me smile.

This is why I stopped doing car shows with my cars in my younger years...  I would always hear comments like .. “yeah this truck is nice but when I do mine”  I referred to them as the IM GUNNA crowd.

  3. Well... I have been involved with customs, restorations and good old fashioned down and dirty clean ups with new chrome and paint... the only term that has bothered me for the last 30 years is the saying “frame off restoration” ... it’s wrong... everyone uses it.. is a unibody car worth less than a framed car because it does not have this opportunity? Isn’t “frame out from Under” more correct? I give up.

  4. Please don’t laugh or roll your eyes... haha. This is my first BBC build and my first time running hydraulic lifters. I’m buttoning everything up and noticed this...when the cam is at full lift the lifter is less than 1/8 from coming out of its bore. I have asked a few people and can’t get any solid opinions other than a few  starting their opinions with “if it was an LS” ... my concern is it being a hydraulic lifter if it floats or bounces or something of that sort I would think it would be disastrous.

    thank you!

That's a real bummer, Steve!  It is rare indeed to receive a package of almost any size that has not been damaged or destroyed by the shipper!  I've had bad experiences with all three, FedEx, UPS and USPS.  They drop severely damaged packages on your doorstep and leave as quickly and quietly as they can.  The delivery drivers don't want to be accountable for the careless handling by their gorilla transit guys.  And, I'm sure the delivery drivers cause some of the damage themselves, also.

Unfortunately, manufacturers are partly to blame also, because they have not improved their packaging to withstand the rigors of modern day shipping and handling.  I hope Summit comes through for you with all the missing parts or an entirely new shipment that is whole.  Good luck!

We will see... my biggest fear is they will require me to send it back... I won’t spend the time nor money to do that . I will just move on to another company. No big deal since I have lots of other stuff to keep me amused. Tomorrow I’m cleaning up my rear axle, shiny black with stainless brake lines and a chrome diff cover to let everyone know I’m stuck in the past.

Yes, Steve, I ordered and installed the 2 1/2" Summit DIY header-back kit for the first gen Monte and have been mostly pleased with it. I do find the turbo mufflers to be a bit loud but you may love it if that's your thing. It is a more mellow/throaty sound, not sharp or crackly (which I can't stand). Unfortunately, I did not have a lift available to me then (I do now) so I did it on my back on the garage floor, which I do not recommend BTW.

Installation would have been a breeze if I could have connected to full-length, straight back headers but the only ceramic coated headers I could find to fit my big block 4-speed (the Z-bar interferes with #7 tube) were the Patriot shortys with 45 degree collectors.  I probably spent twice as much time fitting/fabricating the adapters as the rest of the installation.

All of the sections have ample length to adjust the fit as you like.  The hangers are robust and sufficient for a sturdy installation.  I'll included a few pics and one video (so you can hear the turbo mufflers) below but let me know if you have any specific questions.  Summit's DIY kits are real price performers if you are not looking for anything exotic.  Good luck.

PS. The photos seem to always post in reverse order on this site so starting at the bottom will make more sense.  Also, you'll probably first need to download the video to play it.

The problem I ran into with the kit was the flange on the axle housing was slightly bent from my car being in a drivers side collision at some point in its life. When I installed the caliper bracket on that side the flange being bent prevented the caliper from running true on the disc. I had to cut and reweld the flange to make it all square. Truth be told the car has never stopped as well as it should have after installing the kit but i suspect the issue is in the master cylinder, perhaps the rod being improperly adjusted. I have plans to look into that before this years EM but I have been dealing with it since 2016. It stops okay, but not like a 4 wheel disc car should

Ok this just did it for me! Stock drums it is!! I just had flashbacks to the street rod shop days... blaming the master cylinder and the rod needing adjustment.. heard that a thousand times...  I hope it all works out for you but I need to keep my sanity... ya just saved me some money! Thank you!

I used a kit by The Right Stuff, which is also available from Summit. Are you going to use the Summit kit?

I’m not sure yet. Every brake upgrade I have done used OEM components. I’m just concerned about issues and overall function. I worked in a street rod shop for a few years that did a lot of willwood kits and none of the cars stopped good after they were done. I know the majority of the problems had to be installer error.  I just finished the front brake setup on my commuter KIA 2022 Forte GT using all OEM parts and it works perfect. 2022 Hyundai Sonata calipers, Veloster N 13.6” rotors and Kia k5 brake lines.  3C2780A1-BAF3-435C-90B6-75D4184C74FA.thumb.jpeg.292084f3d70f27e95dd0a1629250ac98.jpeg

Man, if you were looking for the 4x4 kit , I just got rid of one for the price of shipping. Definitely worth the money. I have the UMI performance kit in mine. Upper ,Lower and large sway bar. This tank is like a go cart around corners, and very little sway. Plus it still runs down the road with a smooth ride to me. I also have tubular upper and lower front control arms. Next upgrade, coil overs all around.post-259-0-06116300-1484180397_thumb.jpg

Is your car a bbc or sbc?

Worth it, yes! If your lower control arms are not boxed either get a complete upper and lower aftermarket kit or factory F41 lower boxed arms. You will be happy you did. What a difference!

Yes the replacement arms are pre-drilled for the swaybar ....  I found that by the time I’m done reconditioning the old ones and purchasing new bushings it’s almost the same price as the new set and a lot less elbow grease.

  11. Hello everyone,
I went and pulled my gas tank and decided  it would be a good time to replace the shocks, so might as well do the springs too, bushings looked a bit worn so the logical thing to do at that point is to rip the rearend out of the car and start buying things without thinking ahead...  I purchased a heavy duty rear swaybar that bolts to factory location, my car did not come with a swaybar from the factory. Is it worth the upgrade or should I box it up and send it back?  They kinda look like the old 4x4 axle truss kits from 4 wheeler magazine in the 90s.

    thank you.
