Brakeboosters.com did both of mine. The gold one was done recently. It was about $100, including shipping both ways, to and from Missouri.

The black one is black phospate coated. I'm changing to the gold iridite coated tank and a new old stock compressor tomorrow. I recently had it recoated in California. I don't believe the gold cadmium plating is still available. My brake booster was recoated the same way, and at the same place a few years ago, so the 2 should match.

The only additional parts I bought, if I remember correctly, was the stainless adapter from the collector to the head pipes, and the larger clamps needed there, and 2 stainless clamps for the tailpipe hangers. I bought them on ebay, but I had to take the adapters to a muffler shop and have them opened up just enough to slide over the collectors. The only ones I could find were the same size as the collectors. I made my own tailpipe hangers at the rear of the car out of stainless flat bar stock.

The tanks came either gold cadmium plated, like the brake booster, or black phosphate. I've bought some that were painted, but only because someone had cleaned them up years ago and painted them. When I removed the tank, I could see which of the 2 original finishes it had inside the tank.
I read in these forums years ago that the cars came from the factory with gold, and over-the-counter replacements were black phospate, but I don't know how true that is. A friend of mine has a 53k mile survivor '70 SS454 and his tank is gold. I know the '70 SS454 in Kentucky that just sold had an original gold tank. I've seen others the same way, but I have no idea if a Monte ever came from the factory with a black tank, but maybe they did.

I used the ARH headers and a Magnaflow A-body stainless exhaust system. I installed it myself, but with modifications. The X pipe was positioned for a TH350, so I had to move it back. I also trimmed the ends in select places to get the tailpipes up high, where they belong, and I tig welded the joints that I didn't want band clamps on, with stainless rod. A muffler shop will likely not have stainless wire, but the I don't believe the welds on the mufflers and the X pipe came from Magnaflow with stainless welds, anyway.

Great job on the compressor! You'll need to turn the bracket on the compressor end around the other way.
I used ARH headers too. They are really great quality.

I shipped 4 more detent plates today. I'm very happy to say that I've sold 164 with a satisfaction guarantee and not one has been returned. I have 8 different designs for the '68-'72 Chevrolet shifters. I very recently completed the design for the same features in a '70-'72 Buick shifter. I've sold 10 of them and have a waiting list for more. I've also designed a True Slap detent plate for the '85-'92, and '93-'02 Camaro, Firebird, Trans Am, and GTA. I'm soon to be working on a '66-'67 Chevelle shifter, various years of Mustangs, and Oldsmobile. I've had a number of requests, and one is for the the Buick Grand Nationals.

I checked my collection of '70 SS454 build sheets and all have the 2.56:1 rear gear. That's not definite proof, but it's more than I thought I'd find.

Thanks for the info. I haven't seen the car yet, and I asked enough questions that I stopped short of asking about the lower corner of the core support. The SS I have now has both.

I'm looking at a Flint built '70 SS w/AC that has a matching numbers motor, and the radiator is missing. The motor is out, but all there. The top plate and the shroud are both there. The shroud is correct, but the top plate doesn't have the corner cap that I thought all 454s w/AC should have, due to the 4 row radiator. The car has been stored inside, with the motor out, since about 1978, and the seller believes the top plate is original to the car, because of the originalty of pretty much everything on the car. It's never been repainted.
I'm wondering if anyone has a Flint SS with the 3 row radiator. If so, maybe the strike had an effect on some parts not being the same as other plants.
Anyone with a Flint SS with a 3 row radiator and the standard top plate?

What assembly plant built your car? It's common for a 1970 built at Van Nuys to have the partial VIN stamped vertically by the oil filter, not near the alternator.
