  1. Traffic didn't allow me to get all the way to 70, even though it looks like I did. The angle of the camera lies. https://youtu.be/PIAAAPKVI4o
  2. Sorry to be late getting back to the thread, but I have red each reply. I'll take a video and post it, of the rpms at 70mph (which I have verified with gps). The rear tires are 235/70/15. I tried marking the tire and counting the driveshaft rotations vs 1 revolution of the tire. It came out about 3.75:1. Not sure if that's accurate, but I can't believe a set of 3.73 would run 4k at 70.
  3. My SS454 Monte seems to have a set of reeeaaally steep gears in it. It turns right at 4k rpms @ 70mph. I was thinking of going with 3.55's? Discuss.
  4. My pump went in easily. The pin plug was a little tight to fit and start, but I managed. I finally figured out the bog though. The prior owner had a glass filter inline from the pump to the carb. I replaced that with just a single 3/8" rubber hose and viola! It pulls through without a bog now! Now for a much needed tune-up. And btw, I like the QJ carb too. They get the best mileage, while also delivering max performance. I'm glad I didn't need to replace/rebuild it. Thanks Y'all!
  5. Like I said, it has a bolt hole just under the pin. In fact, you can completely remove the pin through the hole. In any case, the pump that Dan posted, worked just fine. I only wish it had been the cure for the bog I'm having. What carb is everyone running on their stock-ish 454? Mines a QJ and I would like to keep it, so I plan to build it next week and see, but I have been advised to junk it and run an Edelbrock.
  6. When I put it on, it looked exactly the same and fit perfectly, including the existing actuator rod, but I remember the instructions were very specific about holding the rod in place (with a strip of removable tape, I believe) while the pump flange was fitted to the block and bolted up. Mine has a bolt hole under the pin, so I can push the pin all the way up and insert the pump. There isn't any good way to tape it up that I can see,
  7. I looked around and didn't find the answer (does search work on ANY of these BB's? lol), so here goes. My '70 SS had a single inlet/small bowl pump on it when got it. I am now trying to convert it back to the dual line, large bowl setup. I have everything in place, but my fuel pump actuating lever is about a half inch too short on the new pump. Can someone please give me the right p/n for the pump? Thanks! Alan
  8. At the pump, the inbound smaller line (return), looks to have some type of reducer in it. Is that normal?
  9. I have a 1970 SS 454 with the dual line fuel system. At some point the tank was replaced and the smaller, secondary fuel line was deleted. I have recently converted back to a dual line pickup and pump, but I'm having trouble getting it to pick up fuel for the first time. Which leads to my question: Are both the 3/8 and 1/4 in lines feeds, or by chance is the smaller one a return? <scratches head>
  10. Oh, thank god. I was about to get worked up. Seems like these cars are relatively hard to verify as true SS454? (especially without a build sheet).
  11. I ended up toughing it out and laying under the dash (I have 2 healing broken ribs). I reached into the nether regions of the dash and found the release and I have the scars to prove it, but then again, what's working on a car worth if you don't bleed a little? The cable is lubed, that hideous noise is gone and I'm on to the next janky thing this car needs to have fixed. Btw, sorry I didn't do an intro first. I was on a limited time schedule and had to try and get this done asap. Anyway, thanks!
  12. Thanks. I know how it works an all, I just can't seem to find a way to get my hand in there to it.
  13. I found the build sheet to the 71 I built a coule years back, on top of the gas tank, under one of the straps.
  14. Howdy y'all, Alan here from Dallas, TX. I recently bought a 1970 Monte Carlo SS 454. I love driving the car, but the speedometer cable chirps and it's driving me crazy. I have quite a bit of automotive knowledge, but for the life of me, I can't figure out how to get to the back of the speedometer. I removed the lower inspection plate and found that I can touch the back of the clock, or the tach, but the speedometer seems to be captured inside of some sort of shield. I even lowered the column, hoping that would be the key. No love., What am I missing here? TIA!
