Welcome to the club, Santiago! This club is great. You will not find a better group of people.
That looks like a fantastic show with some neat activities (I'd love to go to Laguna Seca). Thanks for the suggestion.
We have been to areas close to Salinas a few times already (Santa Rosa, Pismo Beach, Bishop) and we want to explore some other areas/States for 2010. Several Western states have yet to host a meet and there are some viable options in those states. We will get back to central California in future years but not for 2010.

I'm leaning toward the Medford Cruise myself. It seems to have a lot going for the event and is not as close to the 2009 meet location as some of the other events. Some guys would get an opportunity to drag race their cars too which is something we haven't done in a western meet yet. I did find some other events in Idaho but they were too close to Polson to have as a 2010 meet.
The events which charge admission to the public are typically a little pickier on the vehicles entered (no visible rust, all one colour, must be complete interior, etc). Any members with project cars would not likely be able to enter. We ran into this issue during the 2008 meet.
Still open to other events if you have ideas.

On both my 70 and 72 350 motors, the smaller fitting is on the intake and the bigger fitting is on the water pump so that is where I put the hoses. My 70 is non-AC and my 72 has AC.

Yes, there is a show in Boise I found a few years ago that is a good candidate for a meet.
Thanks to Adrian for his constructive suggestion.

We are looking for some suggestions for the 2010 Western Meet.
The criteria for a meet event is as follows:
- Multi-day car show event
- There must be a member available to organize the meet (preferrably local).
- Preferably late-May until early September
- Parking as a club during the show strongly preferred
- It must be a location where we could expect a minimum of 10 members to attend.
Click the link to see the map of where we have been:
Past Western Meet Locations Map
If you have a suggestion, please provide the location and event info. Simply stating "we should have it in Town, State" is not enough. Please also take into consideration where we have been thus far. If needed, I can organize an event which I'm attending but anyone can throw their hat in the ring.
One note to start this off. Due to the fact that the Western Members are so spread out and that some areas just have a low number of members to begin with, it can be tough to get decent attendance (minimum 10 preferred) in some areas. Also, the fact that there are limited suitible events in the Western States makes it even more difficult to meet everyone's needs.
I've looked into a few events and locations but I'll save my suggestions for later in the discussion.
Email me, PM me, or post your suggestions here.

This is tough to put into words but I will do my best. If you look at it as a cross section, there should be a triangular shape seal but there should be another horizontal peice of rubber under the triangular part (all one peice). This extra flat peice is where it is fastened to the car.

Well, I ordered the chrome 710 cap from the local auto parts store. They couldn't get me the OIL one. Thanks guys.
-
Thanks!
Second question:
I want to replace the cap since the rubber on mine is really hard making it difficult to pop in and out of the valve cover. I've been to 3 auto parts stores and they only have an all rubber plug with "OIL" stamped in it which looks cheesy to me. The one I have is metal with a rubber plug riveted on it which looks a little nicer. Where can I find a decent looking new cap. I haven't tried the Chev dealer yet.
Thanks!
Edit: Just looked on the Year One site. Even they only have the all rubber cap:
What do the other 72 Monte owners with stock valve covers use here?
-
My 72 has a different valve cover and oil filler cap than my 70. The 70 has the cap that fits in the notches of the valve cover and you turn to fasten. The 72 has just a round hole in the valve cover (no notches cut out) and the oil cap is just has a rubber seal that you push in to the valve cover. Is this stock on my 72? I've never seen this before.
Thanks!

Both my 70 fenders have 3 bumpers.

With the exchange rate, you lost two buckles when the car came to Canada, LOL.
Seriously, if it was me, I would buy two more buckles and install them the way it was done at the factory.
-
I was surprised at the difference in the belt systems between my 70 and 72.
1970:
My 1970 has 5 buckles on the front bench (black non-deluxe belts). You hook the male end into the female end and pull the strap tight. Same goes for the center position belt. The shoulder belts have the same male end as the lap belts and hooks into another buckle. All 5 buckles are the same. The deluxe chrome belts might be slightly different but I'm not sure.
1972:
My 72 (deluxe chrome belts) has only 3 buckles on the front seat. The belt (male end) is a retractible system with no strap to pull the belt tight. Once the lap belt is hooked in, the shoulder strap fits into a "keyhole" on the male end of the lap belt. The center position belt is the same as the 70.
Someone may have gotten tired of 5 buckles and removed two of them since they didn't use the shoulder straps. It's also possible the tuckedt them back and under the seat.

My 70 was original with 45,000 miles when i got it and the tag is black. Also black on my 60,000 mile 72. Both cars had no evidence that it had ever been repainted. Looks to be the same colour as the firewall itself.

That's one thing I've learned doing all my painting detail work: the time is 90% masking and 10% painting. Its amazing what you can do with some time and patience.
Nice Work!

I have a driver's side one in good shape. Maybe between Tony and I, you could get a decent set. I can bring it to the Ferndale mini-meet so no shipping costs for mine.

Very funny thread...
Mark is not funny in person at all...

Very cool Jake! I'd love to have something like that. I like cars with cool stories. The original dealership where mine was sold is long gone now. I did visit it once with the Monte before it was torn down but did not take any photos. What was I thinking?
-
My 70 grille was the same when I got it with a haze all over it. I know it sounds silly but I used a brass brush on mine and it came out great. I tried it on an area that is not seen first and it worked well and I got braver as I went along. Pretty soon I was brushing the front of the grill.
I repainted all the black with a Plasti-Kote paint called Trim Paint. It has held up really well.

Found my Answer. See Leo's post:

My 72 has 2 but it looks like it only had one originally based on the wiring and the way they are mounted. Mine are mounted on the front part of the rad support which looks incorrect to me. My 70 has them (2 original horns) on the center brace where the hood latch is. Where was the 72 horn mounted originally?
-
The part of the fender you see from the engine compartment (that bolts to the top of the plastic inner fenders) is black in my 72 Monte. The black starts below the lip about 3/4 of an inch below fenter edge (hope my explanation makes sense. It appears to be original. I have seen others like this but a lot are painted body colour. My 70 was originally body colour from the factory. Was this just a 72 thing? Did it vary by factory?

From the SS454 tech page on the site:
"In 1971 the SS added additional markings on the rear of the car. This included having the "BY CHEVROLET" tag replaced by "SS", chrome strips added to the top of the rear panel below the trunk, the rear panel painted black and a rubber bumper pad."

Not sure why the guards would be different. My 72 guards look the same as my 70.
