Denny
can anyone tell me how to tell if my 454 has a steel crank by the numbers on the block?
MC1of80
Not to be a wise [censored] but they all have steel cranks. Wether or not it has a cast or forged steel crank depends on the original application and year. A 70 LS6 4 bolt main has a forged steel crank. An 88 454 4bolt main from a suburban doesn't. Would need more info on the engine. Also, if it was rebuilt someone could have installed a forged crank back in the day.

MC1of80
I believe there is a thread here. You can also Google big block Chevy numbers and go from there. Good luck.
