Murphy
M20 are considered a wide ratio and the M21/22 are a close ratio........does this refer to the difference in gear sizes from 1-2-3-4?
Mike 57
Here is an example of the difference in the gear splits between M20 wide ratio and M21 Close. Year 1966-1974 Type: M20 Ratio: 2.52 / 1.88 / 1.46 / 1.00 / Reverse 3.11 Year 1963-1974 Type: M21 Ratio: 2.20 / 1.64 / 1.28 / 1.00 / Reverse 2.
Murphy
Yes, I have that info but is the reason for the term "wide ratio" because the spread from 1st to 2nd is higher on the M20?
Mr70Monte
close ratio Muncie's were used on higher hp engines that had lower rear gears (3.55,3.73,4.10&4.56), the main purpose of them was to keep the engine in the upper rpm range after shifting gears. Mike 57
Yeah the gear spread is why it is called a wide ratio.
Blue502
I think it was called a wide because of the spread between 3rd and 4th.You could always tell a wide by the fact that RPMs would drop a lot more between 3rd & 4th, then the other gears.A wide box would give you better acceleration in 1st 2nd and 3rd on a car that didn't have enough rear gear or power. Yes, I have that info but is the reason for the term "wide ratio" because the spread from 1st to 2nd is higher on the M20?
