Guest
Hi everyone What casting number do you have on the 454 Monte engine? is there a difference between 70-71-72 ? I have 3999289 dated '73 came out of a truck, I was wondering if it's the same as the ones used in the Montes SS. Thanks Dave
Guest
According to "Chevrolet by the Numbers '70-'75" - Alvin Colvin block #3999289 was also used in '72 to '75 passenger cars('73-'75 in Montes). It states that this block is identical to block #3963512(used in '70-'71 passenger cars including Montes)except for minor int. and ext. casting and machining changes(also only availible in w/2 bolt mains in production vehicles with heavy usage in trucks thru '78).Hope this helps. mjs-13
I have seen "289" blocks used in late 1971 production cars such as Monte's and Corvettes. So if you see a "289" block in a 71SS and it is matching numbers, it probably IS the original engine.
