  1. It appears to be a Chevy, it's a 10 bolt, 8.2". I can get 3.30's and up to 3.70's in it, (wouldn't wan anything lower) just not sure on durability. He's at $400 on it.
  2. Thanks for that info Sam. Other than possibly not being an original Chevy rear, would there be any other concerns with a BOP rear? If it is a BOP, then the guy doesn't really know what he's selling......
  3. Looking into a different rear end again, I ran across one from a '71 Chevelle with 3.08 gears in it. I have no idea on condition at this point, but with this carrier, can I change gears and put 3.55 or 3.73 gears in it? Just want to make sure that I can go with 3.XX gears (other than 3.08) in this before I really start sniffing after it. Thanks!
  4. Hadn't seen that but I'm not sure I was looking in that direction. $1300 would be easier to swallow. These things are a bit heavy to get shipped - at least I'd think so.
  5. Why the desirability issue, because it isn't a Chevy or another reason? Those rears are a bit pricey... Thanks.
  6. Another rear end fitment question as I'm still looking around. I ran across an A-body 3 series carrier. This should fit into the '70, correct? All brake parts should be able to be taken from my 2 series carrier and installed on this 3 series carrier, correct? Any thoughts on the cost of this one? Reasonable? http://salina.craigslist.org/pts/5414243473.html
  7. The rear main seal, the 2-piece gasket.
  8. Thread restart again... The main bearing gasket change was overtaken by events and put on hold, but now back on. I have the pan off and the cap off the main bearing and can see the gasket. Any suggestions on how to get the old gasket slid out and the new on in? It's in there pretty tight.
  9. I would like to replace the gauges in my '70 with updated versions. I am going with a new dash insert, either bought or fabricated, so there are no concerns with fitment, I can make the hole dimensions whatever size I need. I'll have a new wiring harness as well, the original has been butchered. I'm looking for either mechanical or electrical, either white or black. From what I've seen, mechanical is less money, but anyone have a preference? Gauges I need are oil, fuel, voltage, temp, speedo and tach. So, any recommendation or preferences for a gauge set up and/or a new dash insert? I've looked at the Classic Dash, not sure if that's a typical price or not.. Thanks.

    Fuel Question

That might be the better alternative and has been under consideration. I need to look around for new tank prices.

    Fuel Question

Thanks Bruce. Holy cow, $229 is crazy.

    Fuel Question

Right now it's an uneducated guess that I need one but, I would officially like to ask...Would you have a recommendation? Thanks.

    Fuel Question

Thanks for the info David. I don't know for sure how much is in the tank, the gauge isn't working correctly. The last time I put gas in it was about 2 years ago and that was on the ride home after I bought it. It ran a bit rough regardless so I was thinking some carb work just to make sure I don't have an issue with that as I don't have much of a reference point to work from. Smell? I haven't checked that. I can try to fire it up and see how it runs, that won't be a problem, but it may be several days. Working another issue right now.
  14. My Monte has been sitting for close to a year with untreated gas in the tank/fuel system. Before I try to get it going I plan to pull off the carb to get it rebuilt and drop the tank to get it cleaned. My question is how would I get the remaining fuel out of the existing fuel lines before I put it all back together and get it running, or is that a concern? Thanks.
  15. I've got '70 with a 350 in it, supposedly rebuilt around 25K miles ago, no real idea what the seller's definition of 'rebuilt' would be. Running a 4 barrel Q-jet. I have a pretty good oil leak at the back of the motor, either the pan or the rear main, either which entails a good bit of parts removal to fix, one a little less than the other. The car has been driven little to none in the past year, due to me working on it, the oil leak and under dash electrical issues, so I don't know how strong the engine really is. So now I'm considering a rebuild of the current 350 and adding vortec heads if I can get them at a decent cost. I'd need a new intake, then maybe a different cam, carb and headers to go with the rebuild. Most likely not a cheap way to go, but I've not gone down this road before. A friend has told me he might consider selling me his crate engine he installed in a '74 El Camino, a 350/260Hp engine with around 28K miles. I don't know his setup as far as intake, carb or if he changed any other parts from the original configuration. A new engine is around $1300-1500, then I would need all the add-ons. I don't have a price from him yet, or even if he's serious at this point. I want a good looking, good running street car, no strip. Smoke the tires when I want, a good rumble sound, runs good, and nothing has to be original to the car, other than to look at it and know I'm in a '70 Monte Carlo. Just looking for some suggestions and input on route to take or not take and thoughts on the value of a used crate engine as well. I would also say, this would be a budget type engine build. Thanks.
  16. Found out it's actually 2:56 gears, so no dice regardless.
  17. I've been casually looking for a different rear end for my '70 (along with many other things). I found one local out of a Chevelle, with 3:73 gears, but has a sheared off yoke, for $50. http://oklahomacity.craigslist.org/pts/5032329088.html First - Will this fit a Monte? Second - Any input on cost to repair the yoke? Third - Any input on cost to add posi? Thanks!
  18. Dude... I searched Plug and Chug to find one of those cup holders. You all need to review this phrase in the "Urban Dictionary". While not at work.
  19. Not at all what I wanted to hear, but kind of expected. So I'll need a new gasket for the timing chain cover as well, to go with the oil pan gasket? I had planned on a 1 piece rubber gasket, I've read good reviews on them. So what are the counterweights? Although the engine isn't coming all the way out, I've pulled one engine in my life...... Thanks.
  20. Talk about a thread resurrection.... I have a '70 with a SB 350 in it and I've go an oil leak at the back somewhere, it's not on top as far as the valve covers and intake are concerned. I also checked the oil sending unit and it felt dry. I'm thinking either the rear main or the oil pan gasket, it's dripping from right around that area. I had planned on dropping the oil pan and changing the gasket as this sounded the least painful route for troubleshooting but now I'm not as sure. Do I need to raise the engine to get the pan to clear? Do I need to worry about the timing chain cover gasket/seal as well? Thanks.
  21. In regards to installing a new dash with these new gauges, what needs to be done with the original PCB, or is it just removed and the gauges are powered..... differently?? Thanks.
  22. I ran across a '71 Chevelle 10 bolt with .308 gears in it, non-posi ($250 - and local). This should be a 3 series carrier that I could run some lower gears in, correct? Most likely 3.30's would be my choice, strictly street. I currently have a 12 bolt under my '70 with no reason to think I don't have the typical factory 2.73 gears but I have not verified yet. Any reservations with a 10 bolt?
  23. After some more research on my part, the Ford in my link above won't work regardless, as it is a 5x5 bolt pattern. There may be other reasons, but I stopped once I found that.
