  1. The pan gasket showed up today. What I did was apply a very thin coating of high tack permatex sealer around the bottom of the block. Just enough so just the outside of the gasket will be making contact with it. I let it firm up a little then put the gasket in. The engine is still in the car so to hold it in place I put all the bolts back in to apply pressure and hold the gasket in place. I'm going to leave it for today. Next I will back out the bolts and use studs hoping the high tack sealer does it's job and holds the gasket in place. I will them apply rtv in the corners and maybe around the timing chain cover in the front of the gasket. It is an after market timing chain cover and the front oil pan gasket doesn't fit real snug around the bottom of the cover. That is what was done the fist time and the front did not leak. Then let it sit for a day. I hope this works because I'm off my meds and I might cuss! LOL!
  2. Did you put the rtv on the block corners or the gasket after it was on the block? Or both? Thanks
  3. I put less then 50 miles on my rebuilt 396 and have an oil pan leak. It is in the rear of the pan. At first it was just a small drip when running. So I tighten the rear bolts just a little. Well I managed to make it worse. I know that might happen but I wanted to try to see if that would work. I have the pan out and have ordered a one pc Felpro oil pan gasket. I'm not really knowing what is the correct method to install the gasket. I have spent the last few days online looking what others have done. I think it is a toss up. Some swear by rtv and others say dry. Also I see where it is advised to just add a small amount in the corners. I read that the small amount should be on the block and then the gasket and I have read the gasket goes on and the rtv goes on top of the gasket corners. I also viewed a youtube video where a "builder" used a bead of rtv all around the block and a bead all the the gasket and bolted the pan down. He said he had done it this way for years and never a leak. My head is spinning. What to do? LOL!
  4. That is awesome. My dad and I worked on a couple Chevelles. Both were 67's. To be honest my son is living in Taiwan. The plan was for us to restore this car together. But now he is going to be there two more years. I have Parkinson's and don't know what kind of shape I will be in two years from now. So I started the restore with the help of my daughter and her boyfriend. Soon to be son in law. This car will be my son's. My daughter will be the owner of my other 71 Monte Carlo. My son has his 72 Monte stored here. My soon to be son in law has a 70 Monte we are working on right now also.
  5. Thank You. I watched a lot of youtube videos. It is like having an instructor right there with you.
  6. Did the interior myself. Not perfect but I'm a first timer. The 396 is in just need to hook everything up.
  7. I'm running a 383 in my 1971 Monte Carlo. I also have a 3.55 rear gear. My transmission is a 350 turbo that was rebuilt about 20 some years ago. I have not had any problems, but I do not drive the car that often anymore. I had been running a strong 355 for up until the 383 was installed about 9 years ago. I did drive the car much more often. I also was not afraid to run it hard.
  8. I may be wrong, but I think they will interchange. I have a 1967 Chevelle 12 bolt under my 1971 Monte Carlo. Years ago I put a 12 bolt from a Impala, don't remember the year (67 0r 68?) under a 1970 Monte Carlo.
  9. Glad you have it working! Plus it sounds like it was an easy fix.
  10. Did you plug in the wire for the tach? There should be two wires plugged into the cap. One is your power wire the other is for the tach.
  11. I'm going to send it out and have it gone thru. I have an aftermarket floor shifter. So I will have the column made into a floor shift column. Just have to pull it out and ship it. Talked to Bob from steering column pros this afternoon. www.steeringcolumnpros.com
  12. That is exactly what it is doing.
  13. Thank You. I will contact them. Dale
  14. I would like to know if anyone knows of anyone or place that rebuilds steering columns? I have a tilt steering column I would like to have rebuilt. Thanks Dale
  15. My new bow set came today. This color code is correct with what they sent. All headliner bows are color coded for easy installation. Most vehicles have 4 to 6 bows, however, your vehicle may take more bows or less bows (e.g., 1964 El Camino has a two bow headliner and would take only the red and white bows.) The windshield will be our starting point. 1. Your first color is red (windshield) 2. Your second bow color is white 3. Your third bow color is blue 4. Your fourth bow color is black 5. Your fifth bow color is green 6. Your sixth bow color is yellow 7. Your seventh bow color is orange 8. Your eighth bow color is gold
  16. Thank You Rob! Just what I was looking for!
  17. My friend bought a 70 Monte and the Headliner was gone for the most part. We are not sure if the bows were in the right places. Ordered a new headliner and marked were each bow was located. Tried to install the headliner and the bows will not stay in the "up" position. I see you can order new bows and they are color coded. There is no color code on the roof were the holes at located. So I'm thinking color code bows may not help me. Has anyone run into this problem? If so what did you do. Any helpful suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks Dale
  18. A few more pics. Hope to drop the interior off soon. Then we start on the engine!
  19. It is red. Yes in the pics it does look orange. We are going to build a 396 for it. We have the new carpet for it, new grant steering wheel is on, seats are going to be recovered, B&M ratchet shifter. We need to go thru the brakes, the right front caliper is froze up. The plan is to have it going by late summer. Just depends on my health and the funds. I have Parkinson's so some days I'm just not able to do much. This project gives me reason to push on!
  20. I know, I know, but every Monte we have owned gets the "sticker" treatment! How do I go about getting another First Gen sticker? To tell you the truth it had one on it already. I tried to move it and reapply to the windshield like the other 71 I have but did not work out.
  21. Are these what you are asking about? Found these with my bag of extra parts.
