tonym0828
Hi guys, I put an internally regulated chrome alternator on my 72 and the belt is squealing and the pulley is getting real hot any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
stangeba
If the belt is several years old, replace it and you should be OK. If it's new, tighten it. If it won't go any tighter, the belt is too long. Be careful where you pry on the alt itself so you don't damage it. I think I remember the spec is 1/2"-3/4" of belt deflection at the longest point between pulleys. footballubet
If the belt isn't an issue try lightly scuffing the V of the alt. pulley with some 200 or lighter sandpaper. The Chrome finish may be to smooth for the belt and causing slippage.
tonym0828
thanks guys, it is a new belt because the old one got real shinny. I tightened it and it quit squealing until I turned the air on. So now I will try scuffing the pulley. Thanks again all
stangeba
Isn't the A/C a different belt? (I don't have A/C) If it is different, it may be loose or the compressor is not spinning as it should.
tonym0828
Yea Bruce, it is but it puts a load on the alternator to make spin faster and that extra load made it slip.
