monte70car
A few weeks ago we moved our 57 Nomad from the garage so we could do the rear suspension on the 70 Monte. While moving the cars around the Nomads water temp got up to 250° The elec fan did kick on but it took awhile for it to cool down. The water temp sender is in the intake so I know the headers didn't cause the high temp. The timing chain was replace a few years back to a dual gear drive setup and I believe we lined the dots up pointing towards each other crank at the 12o'clock poisition and cam at the 6o'clock with #1 piston up. Would that cause the temp to read high or is the timming off? It's a 355 with a Comp cam Xtreme Energy cam dont have the specs available at this time. We did pull some timing out of it as it was 36° at idle and ran like there was no power now it runs like it has power but high water temp. In park it idles at 900RPM's and drops to 800 when in OD. Bluemalibu
I'm with Bob... it definitely sounds like a circulation problem vs. a few timing degrees. Pull the radiator cap first to check for flow. Reduced flow would see me pulling the thermostat next; and while very rare, one can't dismiss a mis-marked reverse flow pump or loose impeller. Lastly, I'd look for a curtain of rust built up in the water jacket that impedes flow. Doug
