Guest
Hi I need some help identifying my hood before I look for an ornament. Mine is a '70 monte but far from being original, I have 4 holes in the hood not 2 as mentioned in another tread. I don't know if it's the original hood. The 1st, 3rd & 4th are very little, the 2nd (looking from the grille towards the windshield) is much larger like it would be for a base of an emblem which I beleive is not correct for a '70. Can anyone identify this 100% before I order the spear ornament? Thanks much Dave
MarchieB
i would venture to guess that that is a 71 hood. The 71 ornament was the longest. What is the distance between the 1st and 4th holes? As well the 71 had the spring loaded Chevrolet medalion emblem that was located towards the front portion, probably at the 2nd, larger hole that you mentioned. DaveC
Both 71,and 72 have the larger hole. 70 has all small holes.
Guest
Ok, I checked the hood again, the distance between the first hole (small) and the 2nd hole which is much larger, about 1/2" diameter and a bit oval is less than one inch, then the distance between the 2nd hole (large) and the 3rd hole (small) is about 3" and 3rd to 4th hole(small)is about 1" ....or better yet here's a retarted drawing of my hood: So, any definite answer? to me it seems like a '71 hood with the spear and ornament. Thanks for any help Dave
KLASSIK1
it is a 71 hood the large hole is for the spring loades emblem , just a guess but i believe gm designed the 72 hood ornament to cover the large hole as opposed to changing the hood Leo
DaveC
just a guess but i believe gm designed the 72 hood ornament to cover the large hole as opposed to changing the hood Leo Leo, I think that's probably the case too. Dave
Guest
Thanks guys, therefore I conclude that I would need a '71-'72 ornament cause the '70 spear will not cover the large hole? right ?
David Mau
That would be my guess, Big Dave. But would it be possible for you to fill in that large hole so that you could use the correct '70 spear on your '70 car? Having the incorrect spear on your car would probably make for many a conversation, though. LOL James H. Moloney, author of a book titled "Chevelle & Monte Carlo - 1964-72" shows a picture of his '70 Monte Carlo where the '71 hood spear with ornament is visible. I believe that underneath that photo he stated something like, "The hood spear with ornament is actually for a '71. I know, because in '71 I 'upgraded' it a year". Guest
Ok, David you gave me a different angle to the situation. I'll cover all holes and put a Bulldog on the hood (Mack trucks ornament)
