Driveshaft Length and Yoke Size

Recommended Posts

Hey All,

I am trying to figure some stuff out pertaining to the driveshaft and yoke for this 454/400 swap from a 350/350. Am I going to be able to use the stock driveshaft and just swap the yoke on it to fit the 400 or am I going to need to modify and shorten it because the 400 mounts further back? Also if I can use the old driveshaft where can I find a yoke that will fit?

Thanks for all the help so far on this thing, you guys are awesome.

Hey Curtis... Welcome to the club. :)

Besides changing the transmission end yoke, you'll have to trim about 3" off the driveshaft as the th400 is about 24 1/2" long whereas the th350 is about 21 1/2"...

As to finding a yoke, there's a few members here that have been hoarding parts for years. I'm pretty sure someone's got what you're looking for.

Try looking in the "parts wanted/for sale" section.

Best of lick, Scott.

Hey Scott, thank you I appreciate the answer on this. I am guessing I will need a different UV joint as well for the yoke as the 350 is smaller than what the 400 would be? I will look in the for sale section for sure, thanks again.

NP...

Get the yoke first and measure it. I made the mistake of ordering a UV for my diff. when I switched from an 8.2" to a 12 bolt. Found out they both use the same joint AFTER it arrived.  Now I've got a joint I'll probably never use. :(

I did a little more research on the trans and it is out of a 70's truck, so I need a counterbore yoke 32 spline I believe.

Also, just asking here, if the 400 sits further back and I need to get the driveshaft cut could I just buy the right yoke with a new UV joint and when I get the yoke end of the driveshaft cut and replaced with the new yoke and UV? Since the I am staying with my 12 bolt and have the pinion UV still I could reuse that whole end right?
