Used pinion bearing preload

Hi,

I just replaced the pinion seal on my rear-end.

I did a little mistake, i didn't mark the pinion nut...

Now I have to preload the pinion bearing. How much torque is needed ?

I read somewhere between 8 to 10 INCH LBS. do you agree ?

Another question : is it ok to keep the old crush sleeve as far as I have to drive my car this week, and I can't wait to get a new one ?

I've always taken a turning torque reading before removing the pinion nut. Then you can tighten the nut back to that spec. You should replace the nut anytime you remove it, but if you can't then at least peen it at 3 equally spaced spots. Be sure to use a locktite on an old pinion nut also. The crush washer can't be replaced unless you tear the differential completely down. There isn't an actual torque spec. to go by. If you are using a 1/2" breaker bar without a cheater pipe you should be able to tighten it close enough. Don't use an impact gun or you will probably crush the washer further and increase the torque beyond what the bearings can handle and wipe them out.
