Found this NOS part on eBay. He's not giving it away, that's for sure. https://www.ebay.com/itm/394213167113?hash=item5bc8ef9009:g:HVEAAOSwcdljvYLy&amdata=enc%3AAQAHAAAAsBPltUZ1afYjn6K8hrsYQwvqLqGpTPjN2LcjTVTF6OdLB%2FK79HAB2olNP9RXIltq6BruTig4nGAx2jEFSmlmFedc498WssiS2FhS6JKtJhQKDdGNIBm3awGSiPwf3sUBr7WiZSUJ8V8%2BTq18S%2B4EUZ7e3KBas5XhO2iLWLrS82Fqpw%2F%2Fen55ClV5O2pBu6fyuCY5nCv72XXplykJNf8uXa73RrwQwv2V%2Fyjk%2BIMMm%2FWX|tkp%3ABk9SR-Tiw-XRYQ

In addition to what @MC1of80 said, I did find this interesting bit of information that may be helpful. Full disclosure, I am not a Holley expert. Do you have a PCV system connected? A faulty PCV valve will cause oil to be pulled into the intake and burned with combustion. Does the engine smoke after idling for a while? If so, high vacuum at idle will pull oil past the valve stem seals or even the rings. This will usually manifest after sitting at a traffic signal or someplace where you're idling for a bit. You hit the gas and POOF, several seconds of oil burned off with a big cloud of smoke behind you. Just some thoughts. Hope it helps! Remote troubleshooting is difficult unless it's a 'known' common issue.

I'm not generally a truck guy but I can and do appreciate any beautiful automobile. This is a beautiful automobile. ๐๐

This is super cool! I mean, look at the "heavy duty parts list". It gives you the part numbers if you wanted to build your own! Assuming you could get those parts, of course.

@cny first gen 71 Awesome that you have yours framed, Steve. ๐

Thanks Dennis! Assuming 1-2 days was normal assembly time back in the day, there is a moderately good chance that this car was finished on my birthday in 1970. It must be fate. ๐

I'm really working you guys this past week! So here's my question. In the absence of a body/trim tag, how do we determine the build date from the build sheet? Our own documentation here on firstgenmc.com doesn't go into it and what I've found online is unclear and a bit confusing. I know from the VIN that the car was built in Baltimore ("B") and I have a partial build sheet with the "sched no date" in box #10. That number is "02 06-24". There is information here that says the numbers vary in meaning depending on the plant. "Atlanta and Baltimore runs from 01...99 then starts over..." Much of what I'm reading says the first number, 02, is the first day of production but it doesn't say if that means week or month or something else. Looking at a 1970 calendar, the first work day of the month of June appears to be Monday. I would assume that the 06-24 would mean June 24th but I can't find anything to make those numbers mesh. Anyone know for sure what "02 06-24" means for a 1970 Monte Carlo built at the Baltimore plant? By the way... I did buy a car! I'll reveal soon! Much thanks to all of you for the helpful info during my search!

Hey Frank, no, I didn't look at the 71. I knew I wasn't interested in it so I totally forgot about it. I hope whoever bought the black one enjoys the car and brings it back to its full potential! -
@Dtret I have a partial build sheet (part of it is illegible). It does confirm L65 which would be suffix code CNN on the block in 1970. This car is indeed a 1970 and the block has suffix code CNN stamped next to what I showed you. All indications suggest that it's original. Being a one-owner car helps.

Okay Monte Carlo gurus, here's a good one for ya... I'm looking at a car that has a VIN/engine stamp mismatch by ONE digit. 208338 for the VIN, 208339 stamped on the engine. Has anyone ever seen this before? It's a low mileage original owner car. The engine was rebuilt quite a long time ago which makes me wonder if the pad was machined when they decked the block and they re-stamped the block with the wrong number? I guess it's possible. Has anyone ever heard of or seen this kind of error from the factory? The block is also stamped with CNN suffix code which correctly indicates 1970 350/250hp with Turbo 350 (it's a 1970 car and the build sheet indicates L65, which is the 350/250hp). The odds of this must be astronomical if it's naturally occurring.

Hey Michael. I'm not sure it if was always local to Greensboro. The salesperson said they purchased it through a wholesaler; their own guy who looks for and purchases cars on behalf of Hudson Auto Works. I don't know where this car came from. Agreed that it's a pretty car! -

And here is the other car I stopped to look at. It was at Hudson Auto Works, also in Greensboro. This car was actually pretty nice. Good bones. Nice paint and no visible rust or corrosion. Trunk interior looked great. The body tag (10/748) indicates it was originally Classic White with Black Prima Cloth Bench Seat (this one is vinyl). It's not numbers matching. I didn't get a lot of photos because I was with a salesperson who, by the way, was super cool. His name is Joe. If anyone is looking for a solid albeit unoriginal 70, this would be a good starting point. I thought the price was a bit high but still, solid car. Oh, it was a FGMCC member car so maybe someone recognizes it? They have a large indoor showroom, offsite from their main building, which is clean and well-lit. https://hudsonautoworks.com/inventory/37971/view/CC7747-W/Greensboro-NC/1970-Chevrolet-Monte Carlo -

Well guys, here are a few photos of the black '70 at GAA. In short, it wasn't very good. It looked like they (whoever 'they' are) hastily painted the car and just covered a lot of flaws (corrosion, rust, old flaky paint, etc). There are lots of sand scratches visible and lots of Bondo. I was pretty dismayed so I completely forgot to look at the body tag to see if it was originally a black/black black vinyl bucket car. They did install the missing A/C lines. The carb is a Quadrajet but it's not original as noted by the electric choke. Wrong exhaust manifolds. The undercarriage looked okay but was covered in undercoating, which made me wonder what it was covering. New exhaust. The trunk interior looked better than expected. The keys were in the car but I didn't bother starting it since I knew I wasn't interested. I found lots of NAPA and CarQuest receipts in the glovebox which appeared to be from the dealer who sent the car to auction. On the up side, as @Mopper77 said, the GAA place was pretty cool. BIG. LOTS of cars. The people working there were busy getting ready for the start of the auction today but they were very friendly and took time to show me where to find the car. All of the cars are stored indoors, which I wasn't expecting. -

Okay guys, I went to Greensboro today and checked out the car at GAA. While I was down there, I looked at another that was nearby. I'll update here tomorrow with details and some pictures. I'm kinda brain dead right now after 14 hours behind the wheel from early(!) this morning till now. Stay tuned... -

Thanks Frank. I have realistic expectations. You are correct... they usually look good in photos but in person, eh, not so much. As I mentioned earlier, I'm looking at it as an adventure. One day to have some fun and live a little. And if I'm lucky... ๐ -

If you read my earlier post in this thread, I learned my lesson about 'trust but verify'. I trusted but didn't verify. It was almost very costly. ๐ Hence why I'm considering going to look at this car myself. -

I don't even bother with Facebook groups, Joe. In general not worth it for the reasons you listed. -

If it's any sort of confirmation, my 72 came with one horn. I'm sure it was the original setup. That said, as you mentioned, who knows what they actually did during production. I'll tell you this... two horns is MUCH better than one. There is no mistaking the noise and volume of the two-horn setup! -

Great catches, Jim! I didn't notice any of that stuff (other than the missing A/C hoses). I still can't see the issue with the exhaust manifold, you must have eagle eyes! LOL Thanks so much! -

@Mopper77 Thanks Bill. I did look into an inspection service and found a local specialist who wanted $650. $400 is not insignificant, either. I'm talking myself into driving down and inspecting the car myself. It's about 6.5 hours each way and I can visit a friend nearby while there. I'm looking at it as an adventure. LOL We'll see. If one of the members here is able to do it, I may go that route because I trust the guys here. That, or for a couple of tanks of gas a day of my time, I can do it myself. I'm very gun-shy after purchasing a vehicle recently without doing an inspection. I bought it on the seller's word (a dealer) and it bit me in the [censored]. I was lucky to get the seller to take the car back without a court battle, which is where it was heading. The car was horribly misrepresented so I think he knew I had him by proverbial throat in any kind of court battle. If I go, while I'm there, I might be able to look at that '71 SS that will be up for auction on the same day. I'm not personally interested in that car, but the info may help someone else. Thanks for the info, Bill. Much appreciated! And thanks for the PPS on the campus! Bryan -

Thanks Rob. Great eyes. ๐ This is exactly why I need more than just my eyes on it. I noticed the orange peel in that photo, too. I didn't notice the other things you saw. I'm mostly concerned with paint and rust. Numbers matching would be a bonus. If I go, I'll take my paint depth meter and Bondo magnet. Like I said, I can't get much info out of the auction house. It's a reserve auction and they will only give me a range, which isn't too bad if it's a nice car.
