  1. MontyMen, Let's say a relative (my older brother) connected battery jumper cables backwards during a moment of alcohol enhanced mental absence. He smoked several cables ... fusible link at the starter and a wire to the coil. OK ... I'll take some blame as both my battery cables are red colored at the moment. I know that's not the smartest thing to do but hey, it's what I had on hand that was long enough and 99.99% of the time I am the only one under the hood. So I have replaced both battery cables (color correct now!), the wire to the coil, the fusible link to the ignition (I think?). No joy cranking. Getting 12.6v to the starter solenoid and 12.57v to the alternator. The running lights will illuminate, but not the headlights. 100% stock ignition and electrical. Any guesses or knowledge concerning what else is fried would be appreciated? Cooked another fusible link that I can't see in the wiring loom? Cooked Horn Relay?
  2. I did use an impact driver with a new #3 Phillips bit. #2 bit felt a little sloppy. I did bolt the column back from dropped position to gain some lean into the screw. I will try the tightening a smidge first trick and the vice grips on a screwdriver shaft on the other two screws. Nothing to lose! The only fastener head worse than Phillips is slotted. My hat is off to all the Americans that have given their life in service to our country ... Thanks just doesn't seem like enough ... But THANKS
  3. I wish I could report some progress ... But those 3 Phillips screws are fighting me. I did manage to strip one and now I guess it's drill and EZ out time. Not sure if I will get any of the.3 bowl screws removed but she is going to be idle until I can figure out how to remove the bowl. I did buy a new sector gear ... Always successful at spending money!
  4. Here goes more than one question! Would the sector gear (not sure of the name of the part that connects the rod and the cylinder) cause the actuator rod to only move the cylinder from lock to accessory position? I thought my lock cylinder had failed, installed a new cylinder, and ignition will still only move from lock to accessory position. Then I removed the ignition switch where the bottom of the rod attaches and the rod will only still move from the lock to accessory, never to on or start. I can't see anything binding ( column is still in my 1972 Monte ). This is as deep as I have ever dug into a column. Also ... Is the next step removing the 3 Phillips head screws to remove the upper bowl? I have PB blasted the 3 Phillips screws but they won't budge. That's the only way to access the torx screws that attach the upper and lower column ? The column has developed some slop and play at that joint and I wanted to tighten that assemly. I appreciate anything that can be offered regarding assistance ! I have four different repair and service manuals.. Only two have steering column sections and neither venture past the ignition switch replacement. Thanks Charlie
  5. Congrats Lloyd, I couldn't think of a better choice, if fact, somehow I thought you already were a moderator. You and a few others on FGMCC have saved me hundreds of $'s in advice and avoided mistakes.   6. Wow Steve, thanks for the information. You really got to be a part of the birth of our FGMC (maybe even the exact car one of us runs today). It must feel great to see people so passionate about something you had a hand in building over 30 years ago. Again, this site and you people rock!   7. In the three FGMC's I've know in any depth since 1977, a failure at the front crossmember would be a first for me. Just a small sample though.

  10. Do you ever use your defroster/defogger? If so, replacing the heater core is a worthy cause. A new Delco core cost me $54. I replaced mine about two weeks ago and it took me about a 2 hours to do. If you have A/C, (here in Florida it's a State law, you must have A/C, LOL) you may want to consider replacing the evaporator if it is original while you have it all apart. ------------------ Charlie Pensacola, Florida 72 Monte, 2nd (and last) Owner

  14. I don't know about all the color combinations, but my interior is totally original "Sandlewood" (Medium Tan color) and the steering wheel is black. I also remember two original interiors of friends Monte's back in the late 70's, (Green and Blue) and both steering wheels were also black (with woodgrain centerpiece of course). So that makes 3 confirmed original different interiors colors all had black steering wheels. Hope that helps a little.   15. Posting links-only is common practice on large boards, images do consume too much bandwidth for dialup connections. Personally, I kind of like seeing a picture in the message, as I liken it to putting a face to a name. But hey, I'm just weird like that! Charlie
  16. No offense taken Canuck. It takes a WHOLE lot to offend me! I totally agree that any web page should not have to be horizontally scrolled to be viewed. The only way to assure that won't happen is to limit all page development to 640x480. Most people run their screen resolution at 800x600, although 1024x768 is becoming more of the standard in developers coding. I've resized my image to hopefully not cause anymore horizontal scrolling. If it does still cause any problem, please let me know. I think Andreas has a great idea too ... only use a signature once per thread. Now that I have deviated from the discussion of Monte's toward computer stuff (too much like my 9-5 duties!), I'll try to return to why I started visiting FGMCC, Monte Talk! Not to say I don't mind throwing in my two cents about computer stuff as they do provide quite a nice living for my family... Thanks all, Charlie
  17. Yes, the images in a Signature must be stored on a server external to FGMC. You are correct, a thumbnail is a just a reduction in the dimensions (height and width) of a larger image, resulting in an image of smaller file size. The file size of an image can also be reduced without altering the dimensions of the image. This method reduces the number of colors contained in the image. Dimensionally larger images can retain their visual size, and still be reduced in file size. There is a sacrafice of clarity when reducing colors depth as overdoing it results in a grainy and somewhat fuzzy appearance. Originally, the picture of my Monte is 289kb, but by reduction of resolution (colors), I have compressed it to 17kb.   18. If your goal is to reduce load times for pages and reduce bandwidth usage, then limiting image size in kb (kilobytes) would definetly be the more prudent target. Pixel dimensions are an indication of image size(viewable dimensions), but the file size still can vary greatly depending on the resolution of the image (color depth). A reduction in bandwidth consumption, and therfore faster page load times for dialup users, would be better accomplished by limiting filesize (kb). Also, JPG filetypes (files that end in a JPG extension are usually the smaller image types (vs. BMP or most other formats).   20. Pete, How about if the image is reduced in size to 17kb regardless of pixel size? Computer Graphics was my job for a few years and I can manipulate an image to look quite good and still keep it at less than 25 kb. Most images of the pixel resoultion you stated are at least 25kb in size. If not, I understand, just thought I'd ask since the issue is bandwidth, not resolution. Also, No need for apologies for the flame war Pixtar has started in the Engine discussion thread. I know how that goes, I run several message boards myself.
