  1. Y'all talked me into doing it with the engine I'll be putting in. Plus, with the cam being professionally broken in, it's less likely something will go wrong!
  2. I should think about doing that when I get my new engine in... I've been curious what it had for guts ever since I got the car. Of course, since the original engine that it had when I bought it melted down a piston, I'll just have to figure out what it's got now

    my 71 SS 454

A real SS for 500 bucks more than I got mine for? Sooooo jealous... May just have to shine my paint up and perform a switch some night >.> <.<
  4. Cleaned off the old head gasket material on the Vortec I'm building for it, as well as picked up timing cover and oil pan gaskets, carb stud kit for the new intake, aaand I think that pretty much sums it up. Oh, and got the radiator show panel today. Can't wait to see what it looks like on the car!
  5. Just let me know if you want the one I have when you get to that point.
  6. I probably do it wrong, but it's worked so far... Just tighten the rocker until you can just turn the pushrod, then give it a half turn more. The engine does need to be in a certain position to do it that way though. I -think- it's #1 tdc on the compression stroke, but I'd have to check my chilton again.
  7. I the oil pump on these is driven by the distributor... Though I don't remember how many revolutions it took to start seeing oil last time I checked. Thought it was fairly quick though. Maybe try adjusting the lash on that one valve, see if that helps any.
  8. I'd have to guess can lobe or bad pushrod. Also, shouldn't there be oil going through the pushrods?
  9. It's a Jegs cam, I'm not sure which part number but it's got 252 degrees intake duration, and 262 degrees exhaust at 0 valve lift, and 194 intake/204 exhaust at .050 valve lift. Should be a bit bigger than a stock 400 sbc cam.

    Fuel Pump

Mine may have been modified before I got it, but I only have one line.
  11. Minnesota, and I'd be willing to ship it. Otherwise, it'll just sit in my garage gathering dust.
  12. If you wind up determining its the cam, I have a spare cam and lifter kit that's still new in box that I'm probably not going to use. I don't remember the specs offhand, but I can check tonight.
  13. No problem. I help in whatever teeny tiny ways I can
  14. The exhaust lobe is the lobe on the camshaft that opens the exhaust valve.
  15. Already have the popeye arms from work, lifting tires that weigh an average of 125 pounds for 10 hours a day will do that.
  16. It's not -that- difficult... as long as you keep the car moving, anyway.
  17. That also helped me a bit... Couldn't for the life of me figure out where my kickdown cable hooked to. Of course, my car didn't have a q-jet when I bought it, but at least that gives me an idea!
  18. That's a thing that's going to happen too, though even before the line went the steering felt... unresponsive, I guess. Was just thinking about running through the whole thing to stop something else from going out.
  19. As it sits now, I'm having to run the power steering with no pump because it and one of the lines gave up the ghost. I'll see what I can find for power boxes, I guess.
  20. Well, that was more an "Am I going to need parts to make it happen, or just the box?" type question. Though the engine swap would have gone quite smoothly if my cherry picker had 6" more reach. >.>
  21. Found a manual steering box from a '69 Chevelle for $20 off ebay... Will that fit? And if so, will I need any other parts or is it an easy take out bolt in job?
  22. Alright, sounds like finding one used would be the way to go... What years would fit?
  23. What about a manual box from a Chevelle? Did those even come with manual steering?
  24. I'm doing it right now because one of the lines for the power steering blew... Plus I'd like to take a bit more drag off the engine. I'm young yet, plenty of energy
  25. So, I was wondering if anyone out there either has a monte that they converted to manual steering, and what kind of boxes would fit these cars.
