    rear end

there was a strike in 1970 so they were grabbing rears where they could get them. They had extra tempest type rears so they used them. As for the strength thing... Not trying to start a war- if they were both built the same to perfect specs. I will have to go with the 12 chevy rear for strength. Bigger ring gear and much bigger pinion. plus 12 bolts holding the ring gear on the carrier and bigger carrier bearings too. The axles are larger and 30 spline. I do not think they are even in the same ball park. I do not doubt the rear is holding up like you say. I do think any rear will hold up very good as long as someone has taken the time to set everything up to spec and maintains the service of the rear.
  2. Are you sure you are not talking about the carrier? That is what the ring gear is mounted to and the axles slide into . The carrier houses the spider gears and or posi clutches and spider gears. The axle housing is the cast center that holds the carrier and has the axle tubes pressed and welded into it. These are the proper terms maybe this can help use figure which parts you destroyed. I have diff parts if I can help. call or email me . Jim
  3. What year monte is this for? The rear is going to be much wider than a 1970-1972 rear. the upper control arm mounts are wider also. lower control arm bolts are larger and this is probably a 8.5 or 8.875 half breed 12 bolt with a ten bolt cover. You can not make a 8.5 diff fit a 8.2 or a 12 bolt from 70-72... Nor will the 12 bolt fit the old style 12 bolt. Can not be done. Now it is a totally different story if it is a 1973-1977 monte your working on. Until I know what year you have there is no definet answer...YET. Jim

YES, 1972 MONTES CAME WITH 8.2 C-CLIP TYPE REARS AND 12 BOLT C-CLIP TYPE REARS. AND YES I am sorry for the caps...lol I am not yelling just lazy. lol 1973 GM used the 8.5 corperate rears in all mid size even full size they are good strong rear differentials. If you find a 1971 or 1972 buick or olds rear they will bolt right into the 1972 montes or any other A-Body GM car. They also have bolt in axles too which is a nice feature. I sell alot of them here in Ohio.

Oh god can't bare the thought ...sorry hate to here people cutting the old stuff ...hope that console is a junker... You don't like the horse shoe shifter?? I race with mine, I like it more control for shifting . and you can make up a special plate to control the shift I got one from year one and modified it ( the plate the shifter slides its bar on.) Just some thoughts can't stop you from doing what you want, just trying to sway the thought...lol Good luck. Jim
  6. Hey guys It is alot easier to remove the cable from the tranny pull it up by the engine compartment area by the steering column and add the grease that way it will work its way through the whole line. Also I hve a couple of original speedo cables if you need email me at mitschke454@earthlink.net to work out a deal if you want. Seems like alot of work you guys are doing over a speedo cable... and make sure the cable did not get crushed either some times people pin them between the trannt cross member then move it after they figured it was in the wrong spot ...looks ok but really is crushed inside (the metal shethed tubing) the little square cable spins inside of. it is covered in modeled plastic. Good Luck Guys, Jim
  7. I got mine done here in ohio for 795.00 about 4 years ago ...kevlar band shift kit 2000 stall b&m lock up kit behind a big block I drag race it with slick and with out 13.45 with out slicks and 3.31 gears and 12.80's with slicks and 3.31 gears. Shipping would be the killer. I think he charges 150.00 for a core if you do not have one. Jim I can get a number if you are interested and even pick up and ship reasonable if you would like I shipped a tranny through DHL for 66.00 in a wood crate. NO converter though. mitschke454@earthlink.net
  8. Hey busmechanic , Just remember to have FUN no matter what happens ...lol I am trying to keep that in mind when ever I have a wierd problem on the race car...lol It's a hobby choose the set-up you want and try and make it work. we're just trying to help... having fun.
  9. just remove the bolts jack the tranny up with a floor jack or bottle jack (put a 2x4 or something between the pan and the jack so you dont ruin the tranny pan. ) then remove the old mount and slide in the new one and bolt in and let jack down holding the tranny up. Worse case you might have to loosen the crossmember if you can not get the tranny up enough in the tunnel. good luck, Jim
  10. You can make your own with 5/16 line I bought a 25ft roll (any auto store) bent them flared them and installed them not so hard and probably alot cheaper could do about 2 sets with the left over line. lol. Jim
  11. I think chuckash is on to some thing there. I agree. Jim
  12. I like the old manual down shift idea its easier...lol If you have the column shift I can understand your probs. jim
  13. Or check into the tail shaft of the tranny could be a different style 350 th housing on the body ...is this tranny original to the car? Jim
  14. How about you have the wrong poly bushing for you year vehicle. The have different hieght ones out there. try a different year from a chevelle. I had that problem and bought a different one. The guy just brought out a bunch and I picked a shorter style with the same mounting holes. Jim
  15. With the cam and the big block combo and the overdrive I would think a 2000 stall will still bake the tires and give you good lock up on the high way . I have a 700r4 with 2000 stall (lock-up type) 10.1 compression 272 crame HMV, bout the same numbers as your cam and a 454 chevy monte 71 I run 13.30's (street tires)with 3.31 gears in the quarter and drive on the freeway with no problem but when it locks up in forth it is alittle bogged so I am going to put 3.42's in to bring the r's back up to the 2300 to 2500 range ...I run smaller 26 inch diameter tires 295 50 15's. Jim
  16. Most places have become very computer taken not to much human quality out there anymore sorry to here about the crappy service. thought they would do better than that... Jim good luck on the next adventure.
  17. hey guys, I will set-up those gears and posis for you I love doing it . It keeps that race fuel in my gas tank for drag racing. LOL Seriously If any one needs help or what one set-up let me know I have alot of used 12 bolt stuff and some 10 bolt 8.2 and alot of 8.5 and 7.5 stuff. I even let people come over and watch the set process if they want. I enjoy showing how things works to people. Makes them understand what really goes on in there and othe r components of the car. So FullMonte if I can help you I am here. email @ mitschke454@earthlink.net ...later, Jim
  18. I used TCI for years in street and racing and have never had one go bad yet. You may have just got a bad converter ...It happens maybe someone on the line just had a bad day or something got in the converter some shops can cut it apart and tell you why it failed and call summit and let them know sometimes they will investigate the problem if you send it to them if the problem was manufacture defect you will get another or your money back... I live in akron area and deal with them all the time they sould do something if you are resonable about the problem and keep your head cool. I don't know if you tried or not but it is worth a shot. Jim
