  1. Have installed 15x8s (offset stock: 4" or 4 1/4") Corvette Rallys on rear without quarter panel interference. Car has new rear springs and probably is near 1" higher than stock. Run'n 255x60x15 rear tires. Ed ------------------ '71 Black 406/700R4/10bolt, Branson participant '71 Sandalwood SS454 '71 Project Darkest of Dark Green Metallics/GenIII346LS1/4L65E/12bolt posi
  2. My 71 454SS has a radiator overflow catch can. Suspect it's an aftermarket item. Did radiator overflow to ground through a rubber tube that was attached just below cap or was a catch can used? Thanks, Ed ------------------ '71 Black 406/700R4/10bolt, Branson participant '71 Sandalwood SS454 '71 Project Darkest of Dark Green Metallics/GenIII346LS1/4L65E/12bolt posi
  3. RCR001, The rear corner pieces, as explained above, are bolted on with two bolts per item. Bolt nuts, 3/8", assessable via trunk, underneath package tray. The corner pieces are cast metal and break super easy. 4. Third it. Have seen it both ways. Was the partly colored vinyl trim an option vs trim without paint? Tks, Ed ------------------ '71 Black 406/700R4/10bolt, Branson participant '71 Sandalwood SS454 '71 Project Darkest of Dark Green Metallics/GenIII346LS1/4L65E/12bolt posi
  5. MTDZ28, Suspect core support when correctly installed with bushings doesn't come in contact with frame. Ed ------------------ '71 Black 406/700R4/10bolt, Branson participant '71 Sandalwood SS454 '71 Project Darkest of Dark Green Metallics/GenIII346LS1/4L65E/12bolt posi
  6. You probably used a magnet several times. Can't get to it? Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm. It ain't go'n anywhere. Probably no worse than a big chunk of casting flag. Unretrievable? I'd leave it versus pull'n motor. Yea, it would always bug me too, knowing it's still in there. Too bad motors don't take a crap like animals, it would just pass through the system. 7. Great info. However, a brake pad without the circular metal piece (half-dollar size) are on disc brake 1st Gens. So, the question is: What determined the brade pad having the metal insert? I beginning to suspect the metal piece was '70 only. Thanks, Ed [This message has been edited by ejw71 (edited 09-17-2003).]
  8. Some 1st Gens have a round metal symbol with 'DISC' printed on it in the middle of the brake pedal pad. Did this only appear on certain years? Have seen several GM 1968-72 "A" bodies with front drum brakes. Did some '70 Montes come with front drum brakes? 9. Thanks, Steve. Put'n '70 power windows in '71 454SS. Just will have to exchange the switches, correct? Ed ------------------ '71 Black 406/700R4/10bolt, Branson participant '71 Sandalwood SS454 '71 Project Darkest of Dark Green Metallics/GenIII346LS1/4L65E/12bolt posi
  10. Busmechanic, Go to www.endrud.net/gauges/. Instructions on changing from idiot lights to gauges using orginial curcuit board and orginial engine wiring harness. Using a gauges curcuit board would still require a gauge engine wiring harness to elimate all wiring mods. Kit George suggested is best, least expensive method to convert. I plan on retaining large fuel gauge, by deleting clock. Also using a Chevy/GMC pickup factory mechanical oil pressue gauge (very close to 1st Gen size & design) in place of small fuel gauge. 11. Pyro, Seems like every few, if any, 1st Gen Montes or A-Bodies had them. Have been listed in aftermarket catalogs for awhile, first selling for around $40 You can get em now on eBay for about $25. I've purchased two sets and they are fine. Sure does clean up the air intake area. Ed ------------------ '71 Black 406/700R4/10bolt, Branson participant '71 Sandalwood SS454 '71 Project Darkest of Dark Green Metallic/346LS1/4L65E/12bolt posi
  12. From reading several past posts I've concluded that power window switches for a '71 are different than a '70. Is this correct? Thanks, Ed ------------------ '71 Black 406/700R4/10bolt 2.73 Branson participant '71 Sandalwood SS454 '71 Project Super Dark Green Metallic/346LS1/4L65E/12bolt posi
  13. Bruce, I purchase wiper refills at Walmart. On some wiper holders the rubbers are difficult to remove. Some places want to sell you the entire rubber and holder. I've taken much paticence to remove rubbers with neddle nose pliers. As long as you get correct length rubber refills are available. Ed
  14. Q1. Does build sheets for '70 & '71 SS454s always have both Z20 and LS5 listed? Q2. Do '70 & '71 454 blocks have both VIN and motor codes stamped on block pad in front of right cylinder head or above oil filter boss? Thanks, Ed
  15. John, I also have a '71 SS454. Check numbers on machined surface ahead of right cylinder head. Mine has two lines of numbers. One line is the code 'CDP' which means the motor is a '71 454, second line numbers is the VIN. Mine checked out. Also check front a-arm lower rear bushings. Are they oval or round? Is left inner fender plastic or metal? Go to home page, click Monte Carlo achives, click Teck Info, click Is it a real SS? Here is a bunch of info. Read it all a few times. Then get back with us for questions. Have you found the build sheet? 16. In reference to rewiring starter solenoid. On a '71 1st Gen does purple wire attach to post closest to engine block and yellow wire attach to post furtherest from engine block? And, of course, battery cable attaches to largest post. DaveC, Was the LS-6/4-speed dealer installed? Thought no SS454s with LS-6 450 hp or with 4-speeds were documented. This document info needs to be brought to attention of officer in charge of SS454 technical section. 20. Dave, So the bedliner was available at WalMart? Please check again on product name. Your first sigphoto shows a spilt left rear outer wheel well. Was this a Chevelle part and you modified it to fit? Thanks, Ed
  21. Would have liked to have been in the drivers seat. Just know that 454 was cook'n. Thought is was interesting info about a 1st Gen in a most illegal race. Reporting was from book on the Cannonball by Brock Yates, race creator and former editor of "Car and Driver" magazine. One guess why he's a former editor. 22. The Cannonball Sea-To-Shining Sea Memorial Trophy Dash was held five times during the 1970s. This 2,900 mile race started in New York City and ended in Redondo Beach, CA. A 1970 Monte Carlo 454 SS ran in the 1972 event. Its top end was 140 mph, had Koni shocks and Goodyear radials. A second gas tank allowed for a 42 gallon capacity, a 400 miles range. At 1580 miles the THM 400 was slipping in high gear. At Gene Smith Chevrolet in Elk City, OK a group of after hours determined mechanics got a trans from Texas and the Monte was ready in eight hours. However, the Monte was returned to NY as winning was now impossible. The 70 1st Gen was 25 minutes in the lead when the trans gave out. The goal was to make the trip in 32 hours. Elk City, OK was reached in 18 1/2 hours, a 85 mph average. So, 2900 mile, 85 mph average is 34 hrs 7 minutes plus 8 hours equals 42h,7m. Had the Monte continued on it is conciveable it could have finished 15th. Ed ------------------ '71 Black 406/700R4 '71 Sandalwood SS454 '71 Project Polo Green II/346LS1/4L60E/12bolt posi
  23. datadave49, WalMart was where I was going to buy it. Mmmmmmm, bound to be other sources. Search the web. Ask 1st geners via post in FGMCC General Forum. Probably ad in Hemmings or like pubs. cruise control on my SS

I'm aware of one FGMCC member with a 71SS454 that had cruise control installed by dealer. His father purchased the car new and therefore knows it's correct. My 71 SS454 doesn't have cruise control. However, I've purchased one with plans to install it.
