  1. I have been told I can go either with the T3's or the Power beams but was wondering if anyone had more accurate info. My car was built 2nd week December 1969. Trying to figure out what to look out for. Any help appreciated. Dan
  2. dupe. sorry when I do this on my laptop it goes twice for evry click.
  3. Just realized I forgot to list the Hedmans. Hedman has shorty and full legth headers for the Monte. The current full length header is 1 3/4" primaries but they have a new one that should be out May-June with 2" primaries. They have them listed with No pick and I was told availability May-June. I would try those before the Super Comps unless your good with a hammer!!
  4. Guys here are the one's that fit, PERTRONIX owned(Doug's & Patriot): they pride themselves on fit for both brands. Doug's Headers: their elite brand (D313- 1 3/4" full length (say collector bottom even with bottom of tranny pan) or D306 clippster) Patriot Headers: (1 3/4" or 1 7/8" sizes full length (8024,8026) or clippster (8012,8013) *clippsters verified fit by two members HEDMAN HEADERS (1 3/4" clippster OR 2" clippster no a/c) *verified fit by members HOLLEY owned: Flowtech #31132 (1 7/8" full length) listed on sites to fit. Holley says "mistake" SANDERSON: (1 7/8" shorty BB3,BB1 or Full length C7) *they say the collector on full sits 1 1/4" below oil pan (too low for me) HOOKER COMP's * verified by members w/energy susp mounts which lift engine approx. 3/4" *verified-Nate Z Caution Summit often lists fits for the Monte that the mfr only lists for Chevelle. These assume A-body so must fit. Summit lists the Doug Thorleys as fitting the Monte but when you call them they say they have nothing to fit the Monte. So beware before ordering from Summit, Check with actual mfrs fit list. Dan
  5. I am also looking for a set of headers. Probably full length headers with equal length tubes to maximize scavenging. This way each pulse will get to the collector at a different time. Without equal length headers you may have multiple pulses reaching collector at the same time. I just want to note that many of the mass market headers do not look (or mention) that they are equal length. The only ones that do are "Headers by Ed", "Dougs Headers" & "Doug Thorleys". Hedman is coming out in June with a new full length header #66103 coated/ #65103 painted where Monte's are listed as a fit. They have 2" primaries with a 1/4" flange. The Patriot headers Steve used fit perfectly but were a shorty header (clippster), unequal tubes so it did not have all the benefit of a full length header. The did have a 3/8" flange which was nice. Pertronix now owns Dougs headers so if you go to their site you will have access to both brands. Anyone else have any full length headers that fit (other than the Hooker Comps) without the need of any modification? How do you calculate which primary tube size is best for your car? Big block headers run from 1 3/4" up to 2 1/8"? Overkill looks cool but can rob power. Thanks. Trying to gather info because many sites do not even list the monte. If you use a Chevelle header you may be taking a chance. Dan
  6. For those that may need it, Here is link. From what I remember 7040500 was for a California Monte SS454 automatic with emissions, 7040200 as this one is is for a 70 Monte 454 with automatic transmission. Anyone need one here it is. Dan
  7. Thanks. but these are the thin ones. We are all aware of these. The ones we are talking about were made to match the same thickness as the remote mirror but for the passenger side. Dan
  8. For anyone looking for the passenger side chrome mirror being repro'd to match the look & thickness of the drivers side chrome remote mirror here is the last I heard. Ausleys was in the process of reproing them. The first batch did not come out well in August 2004. I followed up with them in December and this is the response I got. Haven't followed up since. If anyone finds out let us know. his response: We will have a few this week call us On Sunday, November 28, 2004, at 12:25 PM, Dan Ruland wrote: Any sign of 'em? E.T.A? I understand yours will not be remote but will have a similiar look to the drivers side and same thickness. Any truth to the rumors? If so when is the estimated time of availabilty? Thanks, and by the way good decision b/c something like this has been needed for a long time. Good job. Hope to hear good news, Dan - '70 SS454 Monte

    emblems

My 70 SS454 Monte was built first week of December 1969 and I only have the rocker emblems. Never saw a Monte with an "SS" emblem centered under trunk unless it was added by a prior owner. They either use the SS Chevelle fender or grille emblems. I have seen many SS454 Montes that have also had the SS Chevelle steering wheel horn cover added to their car. Not original, but an attempt to announce to all of what lurks below the hood. Keep in mind many people did this to help their cars stand out amoungst the half million other Monte's. Monte SS's had no hood scoop, no stripes, no major SS badging, no SS on steering wheel like the Chevelles. I am sure people who paid the money for an SS454 wanted people to know. This is probably the reason GM added the "SS" emblem below the Monte Carlo script under right side of trunk for 1971 Monte SS454's. See it in second picture on this link. http://www.firstgenmc.com/tech/ss454.shtml If restoring the car I would keep it off to be correct. Just my opinion. Good luck with the resto. Any questions. Parts you are looking for etc......This is the place !! Dan
  11. "Captain MONTE Levanti" strikes again. "Dan your close but actually it is the M20 in the Monte's for the lower first gear rather than the M21's which where the same. The M22 was the "Rock Crusher" that was used on the high performance cars." - Steve I'm not worthy ......I'm not worthy. Tune in next week when Dan forgets to keep his feet "centered" on the floor mat in Steve's car. This could get ugly. . . very ugly. Thanks for the correction. Dan
  12. Muncie M-21. They used the M-21 instead of M-22 simply for the lower first gear. The trannys are identical except for the gears. Due to Monte weighing close to 4000lbs they did this to help off the line.

    Air ride system

I have 1-supposedly NOS compressor, 1-used compressor (hopefully can get one working out of two), new lines, NOS L.Levelling switch & NOS SuperLift shocks. Hopefully, when the time comes I can get it to work, otherwise I will do as mentioned above so it at least looks legit. Once they work they work. There is a guy who can rebuild them, I do not know his name. Contact Robert Lyman from FGMCC. He is in Wynantskill NY. His board bame is Last88SS. He knows the guy. Dan

    Air ride system

If the rear sat low due to many passengers or a load in trunk, compressor on inner drivers side fenderwell would automatically kick on to level off the car. Once the extra weight was removed that pressure would then be released to bring car back to level again. Simple concept but not many still work as designed. Thats why many SS's have had them removed. Once they did not work they were tossed. If yours does not work many members put a fuse in the vacuum line from carburetor to stop vacuum leak. Then run air shock lines to compressor and just use the valve at rear of compressor to fill air shocks manually. This way it still looks legit even if it does not work as designed. Original proportioning valve above differential will balance pressure between rear shocks. Dan
  15. I had an original "blue dial" 71 Delco AM/FM stereo radio fully restored and converted to a green dial (correct for '70). He also added audio inputs and outputs to add a CD changer and/or amplifiers to the stock radio. Here is his site: http://www.wonderbarman.com Just wanted to mention another option. A bit pricey. Maintain stock look with modern sound. Dan
  16. That sounds like a steal. See if they have a low ratio version. It would be a big benefit do to the weight of our cars. Like I said in earlier post, final drive ratio (3rd gear) would still be the same. Dan
  17. A stock 700r4 will not handle the horsepower you have. Actually your best bet is probably 200R4. I have attached a thread that has the info I passed along to DataDave. It also includes reasons I was told to avoid a 700R4 with a bigblock. http://www.firstgenmc.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=4;t=000304
  18. Dave, Thought you could benefit from this info from other forum. All the street/track racers on Long Island use 'em. These guys www.fbperformance.com suggested two options to me. 1- A low ratio Turbo 400 with 2:75/1:57/1 gearing instead of 2:48/1:48/1. This will make a 3:31 rear seem like a 3:73 of the line but you will end up with the same final drive ratio in third gear as stock. So highway speeds will be bearable. He says this optional "low gear" set-up is especially important in cars weighing over 3800lbs (We're all there) to make up for the extra weight. 2- He also makes a C200R which will handle up to 500HP that will handle the torque of a big block. These are the same length to crossmember as a Turbo 400 (27"). In most cases you can use original holes for cross member, or may have to ovalize holes a bit. (He just swapped a Turbo 400 for this tranny in a 70 Corvette and it bolted up to stock crossmember holes) You will need either a slightly longer yolk or a longer drive shaft. This tranny has 2:75/1:57/1/overdrive so has same benefit as low gear Turbo 400 with an overdrive to boot. Important: Alot of you mentioned using a 700R4. They are great for small blocks but not the best choice for big blocks due to torque generated. The problem is they have such a high first gear (3.06/1.62/1.00/0.68) that with all the torque of a big block 2nd gear will always hit hard. Often, second gear is blown out b/c it gets beat up. This is why he recommended the C200R if I was interested in an overdrive tranny. Check out your resources to validate .....but it sounds logical. By the way Street/Strip Turbo 400 $950 Street/Strip Turbo 400 $950+495(low ratio) - $1445 C200R Street/Strip $1695 For a $250 difference between "low ratio" T400 and a C200R I say go with the overdrive. http://www.shiftworks.com sells kits to convert factory horseshoe shifter to a 4 speed set-up.
  19. Check out these guys. All the racers street and track use 'em on Long Island. http://www.fbperformance.com
  20. www.trimparts.com has alot of the emblems etc. They are authorized by GM to replroduce them and have chrome quality of today. Much better than 30 year old NOS chrome. For interior parts, from what I have heard PUI stuff is the best quality. http://www.puiinteriors.com I believe they also sell there stuff at YearOne.com and Original Parts Group.

    SS Engine Block

Another avenue you may run into luck is either contacting Cecil McKeithen, Leo Konik or Steve Demers from club and see if they might have a totalled SS with the block still intact. Go to main page parts sources page

    SS Engine Block

My vote..... Since the engine will never be numbers matching (to Vin#) it probably doesn't matter to much. Unless you are lucky enough to find an original factory replacement motor for your year that has not been stamped with a vin. That is like finding a needle in a haystack but they are out there. I say get an LS5 and make it look as factory correct as possible. If it doesn't match vin it doesn't matter whether its a CRN or not b/c it would still only be a correct year block but not correct car. I say save yourself the headache of looking for a "CRN" which as you know were not stamped on too many LS5's and go for something like this and be done. It even has the correct air cleaner which is worth $100. Saw it on eBay after reading your post and thought I would pass it along. It is a 73 motor but I am sure you were going to rebuild it to your liking and HP anyway. Dan Here is link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayIS...828603&rd=1
