A/C Hoses - R12 vs R134

I have an original A/C Hose that's in great condition and was looking to buy the other hose, however, the hose I have was used with R12 refrigerant and I will be using R134 going forward. The sales guy from Classic Air advised that I would have to have my orginal hose reconditioned/refurbed to run R134 in it and advised that if I didn't have both hoses to be reconditioned I could buy the other hose from them (new) that is already in condition to run R134. I'm no R12/R134 expert so does anyone know if this is truly the case or is he simply trying to get extra $ from me? Also, does anyone know of a place where I can find these hoses at an affordable price?

R134 hoses have a inner barrier made of Teflon, but without warranty for accuracy, I found this:

Quote:
If your old hoses (R12) are still in good shape, go ahead and use them. Older hoses become glazed on the inside that helps to seal them well enough for R134. A molecule of R134 is smaller than a molecule of R12 and the theory is R134 can seep through non-barrier hose. If a system leaks at a rate of one pound per year (which I doubt it would) with R134, it will only cost $4 to top-off the system.

Hello,

I have used those silly r-134 conversion kits on many of my own cars and friends cars without changing a darn thing, nope not even the O rings. I had the r-12 systems evacuated and filled them up with r-134 and never had a problem yet.

"Specialists" say the oils wont mix, and the O rings will blow out but i have yet to see any issues.

Still its a "do at your own risk" procedure.

You cant run r-134 in an old york system (usually found in early 70s A/C conversions or in ford vehicles of the same vintage) but i am not sure why.

andreas.. that's why california wants to ban the sale of r134a to do it yourselfers.. that slow leak down is still an enviromental hazzard in their opinion....

they want to try and ensure the systems are repaired correctly before being refilled.. I can understand taht... i dont' agree with their methods.. but IC an understand their point of view.
