wandalee
I know it has been discussed before somewhere, but is the horsepower rating on a 1972 402 actually 245 ? Seems to me that it should be higher considering the size of the engine... I know they did something in 72 to decrease the horsepower....What all was done to the engine that year..... thanks.... wandalee
montefrazer
Changes in how horsepower was measured, engine detuning, and some number fudging from the car makers for insurance purposes make this change for 72 confusing. http://ateupwithmotor.com/automotive-terms/47-gross-versus-net-horsepower.html This site explains it well. gprimm
Prior to '72 they would dyno the engine with no accessories. After they would hook it up with with the PS pump, alternator, A/C compressor. That's what GM guy in Warren, MI told me at the National Chevelle Owners Assoc. Convention at the Tech Center. Sly guys!!!
LostnFound
In 72 they quoted "net horsepower" ratings. Here's the explanation for the Chevelles. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chevrolet_Chevelle
