  1. Jon... i think i missed the point first go round , about this being a NEW problem . I know i read an article some time back about the newer high milage tires have different compounds for tread life and fuel milage .it seems it was more carbon added .but anyhow that caused lots of complaints to dealers about shocking exits . sooooo , did ya get new tires over the summer no answers to the problem . just more questions . lol mike
  2. Jon ... i have the same problem here in fl as the seasons change and it gets cool.what i do is put my left hand on the aluminum trim plate in the door opening as i step out. it also happens in my truck. there i put my left hand on the door striker bolt as i step out. one way thats supposed to bleed of static is to hang a rubber strap from the frame to the ground so it drags the ground all the time .i have seen them before but never tried it myself. mike
  3. Paul...sorry to hear you have problems . i hope you can figure the cause so it doesnt come back again . mike
  4. hi VooDoo427... in my installation i hooked the power wire to the outer front pin . i had the Painless Wiring kit . there is only one wire to the transmission . there kit comes with a new lockup solenoid , a pressure switch to install in the valve body,a vacuum switch and a brake light switch.i also added a toggle switch to defeat the lockup when i dont want it on . i ran power from the fuse panel to the toggle switch . the vacuum switch and brake switch are both to interrupt the power and unlock converter .hard acceleration causes the vacuum switch to open the circuit and unlock . brake switch also opens the circuit to unlock .when these two switches are closed there is always power to the converter lock up soleniod.(in my car the toggle switch has to be ON also ) it cant lock until the valve body pressure switch sees pressure . i think that switch was installed in the 3rd gear pressure line of the valve body. hope this helps mike [This message has been edited by Grease (edited 10-31-2003).]
  5. its a little tricky but you can reach the release button on the switch from the bottom , without removing the dash. i'll see if i can take a picture of a switch to show the release button. mike
  6. Granpa.......if its a 70 thats the only year Monte used that knob.it would be Chrome around the edge then a thin black circle followed by a thin Chrome circle and the center would be black ,about the size of a quarter. it was used in other Chevys in 70 also . perhaps check in some Impala/Caprices 72 was a black rubber coated knob with a picture symbol of a headlight. its possible 71 was like 72 or perhaps 71 didnt have the picture . as for removing the lamp switch knob stem ...reach up from bottom of dash . on the forward end of the switch there is a little button .pull the knob stem out as if to turn on the headlights.when it is this position, push in the little button on the end of the switch. while pushing the button pull the knob stem again and it should come out of the switch . to install the new one(replacement) just push it in as though turning off headlamps. mike
  7. Dave i think that 10bolt/12bolt axle is a BPO axle . i cant remember if its a 10 bolt cover on a 12 bolt carrier or the other way around.its been briefly discussed a good while back . mike
  8. I had a pet peeve once but it ran away .
  9. i have not checked into this yet personally, but i have been told by several folks that TRUCK 12 bolt parts do not fit CAR 12 bolts . he says its from an 80 suburban so i recommend you to check with someone on this point . i hope i am wrong for your sake but i wanted to let you know cause i have heard that . mike
  10. Jerry the inner fenders should fit no problem. the fender itself is different for a 70 . where the fender attaches to the core support on a 70 there are two bolts . that section of the fender is flat . on 71/72 this same section of the fender has a step between the two bolts . if your not going for a perfect show car i think the simple fix is a few washers under the higher section of the fender . if you want a more original look i think you might cut that section for your old fender and have it welded in . also on the front of the fenders theres a change ih how the fender extensions fit/attach . i am not sure just what it takes to resolve that , though i think its not real complicated . good luck mike
  11. on the big block Q-Jet doesn't the fuel line come into the front of the bowl where as a small block Q-Jet it comes in from the side ? i think i remember now that Chevy carbs fuel inlet is from the right side. other divisions come in from the front. at one time i had been using a carb of off a 455 . that must be what confused me. mike [This message has been edited by Grease (edited 09-29-2003).]
  12. 5500 is the redline for a Big Block car. mike
  13. if you are familair with the way the axle is assembled it uses a crush sleeve to preload the pinion bearings. what they meant about using a torque wrench before disassembly,is to find the resistence to rotation.this takes a DAIL INDICATOR torque wrench . ....you turn the shaft and read the torque value . then when reinstalling you tighten in small increments , all the while checking the resistence till you achieve the same as before you took the yoke off. i have seen folks make a paint mark on the nut and shaft , then count how many turns it takes to remove the nut . reassemble the same number of turns . if you have the axle apart and the pinion removed it should get a new crush sleeve for assembley. mike
  14. as best i can remember the control valve for the level ride unit mounts to the frame above the rear axle and conects to one of the upper control arms of the rear axle . mike
  15. Loyd....if your smoking , now may be the time for a new set of rings . do a leakdown test on the cyclinders first though cause maybe its just bad valve stem seals mike
  16. the engine would have been painted after its built , so the bolts should be orange. i believe the dipstick and tube to be black
  17. EHHHHHH WRONG . the wagon while having 116" wheelbase is a totally different frame then the Monte . mike
  18. The First Gen Monte uses a special frame . yes its wheel base is 116 like the four door and elky, which dont use the same frame either. Monte Frame is long in the front section , firewall forward.side rails and rear are same as a 2 door chevelle Elky uses a station wagon frame which has a different shape out back , and long side rails chevelle 4 door uses a longer side rails than a 2 door , the rear section same as 2 door chevelle and Monte mike
  19. Stick.......i have never worked on the rear trim part . i think you are talking about the wide piece below the trunklid, which i think is aluminum . i have worked on several windshield moldings . for those i took a piece of hard wood ( from a wire brush handle ) and as George said you can work them out . the way i did the moldings was grind the wood to the contour i needed and lightly tap from the inside . the piece was held against another piece of wood . i hope this helps . mike
  20. the first 70 i had the frame cracked on the right inside . its been yrs ago but i think on the verticle weld of crossmember to frame. mike

    Load leveling system

Welcome to the group . from my limited learning about the level system . ( i am tinkering with one ) i find that the pump will not make pressure if the system leaks down . i find it has to have some pressure in the system , then the pump will produce pressure . if the pump is making pressure the actuating valve must be in working order also . if you look at the compressor , it has a schrader valve where you can add air pressure externally . mike
  22. thats cool Pete . i'd love tho hear the song myself.
  23. the rear seat on a convertable is a little more narrow because of the top operating mechanism which is fit into the side panels. not sure 3 folks could fit there. mike
  24. Gene ... one of the orings you want to replace is probly causing the gear housing to stick in the tranny case.i cant remember if that gear housing has two flat sides that a wrench may fit to twist it some.another possiblility is wrap a wrag around the trheads and twist with pliers.
  25. Hmmmm ? the electric solenoid is now operated by hydraulics ? mike
