  1. Newbie, but not new to the Monte Carlo…

Back in early 1970, I was stationed  at Yokota AFB Japan. We were due to rotate back to the US in June..

I had ordered a new Dodge, but I saw the new Monte at a dealership near the base ……I  immediately cancelled my order for the Dodge ordered one exactly like the dealer had… ForestGreen, with bucket seats, black vinyl top and fender skirts/AC….    $3200 ….. We picked her up at the dealership in Reno Nevada ,, June 1970 and drove to Jacksonville Fla and then back to my new assignment at Luke AFB AZ…

Sept 1971 ….. The world was spinning fast for me in my military career… The AirForce promoted me and decided they wanted me at Anderson AFB Guam… Again , we loaded the MC with the kids and dog and took another trip back to Florida… We then drove her and the kids to California and took off for Guam …Three weeks later the car was delivered to me on Guam...

1972 ….. Ten months on Guam and the Air force decided they needed me back in Japan.. and shipped the car to Yokota AFB..

1973/ 1974 ...We drove the car in Japan for about two years and the Air Force decided they had another special assignment for me and shipped the car back to Calif and we again drove her to Florida and returned to Barksdale AFB Louisiana for instructions on my new job in Oklahoma…

BTW while in Japan I ordered a new 1974 1200 Harley Superglide (AMF)  and it was delivered to Shreveport …

1974.. I rode the Harley to Oklahoma and my wife followed me in the Monte with the kids and a YouHaul…

Eight months in Oklahoma and I was off to Udorn AFB to close up another military site …  We were winding down military operations in the Vietnam war and that was my job… I left the family and Monte my motorcycle and a 54 Merc , and 36 chevy in Oklahoma …  As you see , I picked up a few toys along the way…

8 months in Thailand and I was sent to back to Oklahoma to pick up my family and to report in at Beale AFB Calif, where I worked with the SR71 and U2's logistical support…

I pulled my 36 Chevy with the 54 Merc and my wife drove the Monte, kids, Dogs ,Cat and a YouHaul with my Harley.. .I felt like an episode of "grapes of wrath " LOL..

Needless to say it doesn't end here… New home… New Cars, more cars , more trips cross country MANY times … Off to Germany Ramstein AFB .. travel to  50 over Countries … Stored cars… for many years hence … The story is long.. But it's been a fabulous life …

Married to my wife for 62 years.. Kids older than most of you… I'm 80 years old and feel 40… Retired from the Air Force 40 years ago .. successful business and loved every moment of it …. 8 Grand kids ,, 8 great grand children … hope to be a great great grandfather in about 4 or 5 years...

The biggest problem is I can't type … LOL  IMG_0054.heic

    Cam question

Beautiful car. I'm the second owner of mine.. I've owed it more years than the original owner…He had it 17 years. I've owned for 30 years… I added the Rally wheels to the Bonneville about 10 years ago. Got tired of chasing after 14 " tires.

    Cam question

Lucas seems to work well for me. I used the Lucas break-in oil. and currently using the 10/30 Lucas racing oil with Zinc. . Even though I have a roller cam I feel safer with zinc… I plan to use the 10w/40 with a K/N filter on my next oil change. What amazes me is how smooth the engine runs and how much power this engine has. The Roller cam is worth every dime it cost. I'll take the 20MPG with power to spare any time… My Daily Drivers.
  6. 1500 miles on break-in of the original nrs matching engine. 350/ with 041 heads. Roller cam. Lots of low end torque between 1000 to 4500rpm…. We live in hill country and this works extremely well for us…. 700r4, 256 gear ratio…. Avg highway milage has been consistently 20 mpg. In the hills and local driving it's 15/16mpg.

    Cam question

Back in 1992, I pulled the original 4/bolt main ,, 041 heads, 300HP,, 350 engine and stored it in my shop for 28 years. Just rebuilt this original numbers matching engine 20/over, with roller cam.. The Roller cam makes a huge difference in how the engine handles power. The power is smooth through out the power band and does it effortlessly and quieter… This is a great upgrade..!! Rear end ratio is 256 gearing,, 700r4 transmission,,,,w1900stall converter … 215/70 tires… Engine has great power and lots of low end torque between 1000rpm to 4500. .. Engine currently has 750 miles on break in … Highway millage was 19MPG during break in…. local milage is about 14mpg …. … No need to lie about economy.. It seems to get the best mileage at 70 to 75.. RPM at that speed was about 2100. My tach is a bit off, so I'm not certain … … This car is set for cross country and freeway driving …. I actually got 20mpg back in 2005 during a 28 state cross country 9000 mile trip. Ed C.
  9. I took the original 300hp 350 in for a rebuild... I removed it 28 years ago and stored it in my shop. I plan to keep it basically stock except for a roller cam , lifters and a few upgrades ... Any recommendations on lift and duration would be appreciated. I installed a 700r4 about 8 years ago with an 1800 stall convertor.... When I installed the 700r4 , I originally went to a stall speed of 2400... Drove the car 300 miles to a car show and got horrible fuel economy ...... The 700r4 with the 1800 stall gives me a drop of about 500 rpm when compared to the stock th350.... .... At 60mph it runs at 1800rpm,,,, 80mph it turns about 2400 rpms.... Great gas milage. Edlebrock 650, Edlebrock,,,,, performer intake. Ed C.
