  1. I need to replace the upper ball joints and all the control arm bushings on my 71 monte carlo. I want to replace the front control arms with tubular control arms. I found some on eBay and they come with the ball joints and all bushings. I am going to replace the springs. I already ordered. Moog springs from rockauto. They had springs for ac or without ac. I ordered the ones for ac because my car originally had ac. Now I'm wondering if those springs are too heavy. Has anyone ever installed tubular control arms from ebay? They are way too expensive from a place like Jegs. I want to keep the stance of the front end the same. Anyone have any advice,
  2. How could I get some touch up paint for very minor chips? My 71 is not a factory color paint.
  3. I've had my 71 to a show in Rochester NY and only saw one other one
  4. I got the seats and stock mounting brackets from Ebay from 2 different sellers. I took out a bench seat. the outside of the mounting holes was the same, and the inner holes I drilled thru the floor board, backed underneath with a plate with a 3/8-16 welded nut. I did have to drill 2 holes in each of the stock bracket brackets for the seat mounting holes.
  5. Here's some pictures of the new interior on my 71 monte. I am so happy with this car. I got it locally for a very good price and swapped a lot of parts from my 70. Radiator, clutch fan, fender moldings, headers and entire exhaust system replaced water pump, fuel pump, all belts and hoses. This car is one of the best running cars that I've owned.
  6. The simplest way is to leave the column shifter in park. Remove the column shifter arm. And remove the linkage rods that conect to the transmission. Find the neutral safety switch, pull the connectors off and run the wires to the switch on the center console shifter switch.
  7. I use Castrol gtx 10w30. Can you switch from conventional oil to synthetic without any trouble?
  8. Does anyone want a 1971 Monte Bench Seat. very good condition. The photos show 2 imperfections. Asking $550. I live near Rochester NY. you can call 585-750-8073. Thanks Wayne
  9. Does anyone have a 1971 neutral safety switch for a 71 center console shifter?
  10. Do you have headers that are very close to the starter motor? I had a 67 Impala with that. ounce the engine cooled down, no problem. Ended up putting a small high torque starter motor in.
  11. Yes I will have the switches in the console. I will run the wiring from the wires that went to the switches on the column.
  12. I'm not going to keep the lockout rod on. I don't want the steering column moving with the console shifter. When I remove the shifter on the column I will fix it in the park position.
  13. Got the shifter mounted with the hole for the cable. Cable is hooked up to the shifter. Still need to hook up to transmission. For the rear sheet metal bracket, instead of screwing it with sheet metal screws, I'm going to put it in place and use JB Weld. I know this will work. All it does is support the glove compartment box at the back. I'm not a welder. I have used JB Weld for things that take a heavier load, even patched gas tanks. For the shifter I used heavier body bolts with finer threads so more threads in the floor than the ones that came with the kit.
  14. Frank, Thanks for those PDF files. Instructions are great. I don't have the dimples showing because my floor boards are coated , but I can see the the raised area for the cable to go thru . I'll start from there and work from there back. For the rear bracket I will have to mount it back farther. My mounting holes in the after market console must be different than original. I will have to take the bucket seats that I put in back out to install, no big deal. Thanks everyone have a great weekend. Wayne.
  15. I'm swapping the bench seat for bucket seats and the stock center console shifter on my 71 Monte. I found a video of where the sheet metal bracket mounts in the back. I need to know where to drill the hole for the cable. Also all the mounting screws to the floor are sheet metal screws. My common sense tells me that I should use bolts and washers and nuts. Any advise would be greatly helpful. Thanks Wayne.
  16. I Just looked at my neutral safety switch and it has only 2 leads. So I would think that one is for the neutral safety and the other is for the back up lights. Let me know if I'm right? Thanks, Wayne.
  17. I think on my 67 Impala I used the the neutral safety switch on the column and for the lights on floor shifter I wired them to the ignition, so when the ignition was on the console lights were on. I didn't use any wiring harness. Just trying to keep the cost down and simple.
  18. I'm going to convert my 71 monte to center console shifter with bucket seats. I had previously put a Hurst promatic shifter in my 67 Impala. I wired the backup lights from the steering column to the switch in the shifter. Can I do this with the monte carlo center console shifter? I see some of these have a wiring harness. Do I really need this? Thanks Wayne
  19. I removed the dash pad today and I finally have both directional indicators working!!! I had an extra 1967 Impala dash panel that I saved all the special bulbs.
  20. Thanks, I would have never realized that I could get at them from the top.
  21. My directional lights on the outside of the car work front and back, but on the dashboard only the left indicator works. I'm pretty sure that it has to be the little light that twists into the circuit board. I can see it from underneath but I can't reach it. Is there away to get at that without tearing the whole dash apart?
  22. Yes I sold the 1970 Monte. I have to admit I really never liked the 700r4 transmission the way it shifted 2nd to 3rd. I happened to find the blue 71 about 2 miles from where I live. It's all stock except for an Edlebrock carburetor that I put on it. I swapped a lot of parts from the 70 that were better before I sold it. It really runs nice.
  23. On my 71 Monte, when I got it the directional signals worked only on the outside of the car, not on the Dash. Now the left one on the dash started working but not the right. also you don't hear it. Any suggestions on what I should start looking?
