  • Decoding Turbo Hydramatic 400 Transmission

    The TH400 transmission has a tag on the passenger side of the transmission with codes to indicate the model year, the engine it was coupled with and the day it was built.

    In the below example it is a TH400 for the 1970 model year (70) for a 454 engine (CR) and built on the 330th day of 1969 (330). The serial number is 5281 (5281).

    Each transmission will have the last 8 characters of the VIN stamped on the housing preceded by a "1" indicating it is a Chevrolet.
    Example: 11B123456
    Chevrolet vehicle (1), 1971 (1) built in Baltimore (B) with a sequence number 123456 (123456)
