Is this the oil sending unit?

Hi guys. After removing the holder plate of the A/C compressor I have found two not connected cables which seem to belong to a part which I would say is the oil sending unit. It's on the drivers side near the spark plugs.

There was a female connector stuck on it

which can't be used anymore so I probably will try to reconnect the cables with single connectors instead. There is a green and a green-white cable hanging around. Is it important to know which one belongs to which contact or is it interchangeable?

That is the temp. sending unit between the spark plugs. The oil sending unit is on the top of the engine block in the rear below the distributor. It should have a single dark blue wire going to it.

On this unit it does make a difference which wire goes on which side. Look at a 1971 wiring diagram to determine which way it goes.

That is what I was puzzled on with this being a 71 was not sure but never noticed 2 wires on temperature sending units or oil ones either as they ground to the vehicle (and what more ground can you have then a giant hunk of iron) grin

Is that anywhere available online (for free)?

I have no knowledge about that thing so I'm curious what happens if the cables are not connected?

that depends on if the rest of the system is hooked up

it holds off vacuum advance until in third gear, I think it doesn't operate until the engine reaches operating temperature

Great find. smile So on the photos it's clear to see that it's only one connector with two pins. That would mean I can connect the two cables my way.
