mdriley675
The wire going to the coil is smoking and the car will not start. This wire looks like its worn.

Sam (Bones)
well it has to be shorted somewhere you will probably have to un-wrap the harness to find the problem, if it was me....I would take the engine harness right out of the car, but first I would disconnect it from the coil and turn the key on and see if it smokes then, and test it to make sure it has power, approx 7-8 volts (it's a resistance wire) if it has power and doesn't smoke, your coil is probably bad
mdriley675
Thanks sam I did replace the coil thinking it was bad there was no fire. That's were I noticed the wire smoking.
stangeba
Just trying to understand the line of events. You have a stock, points style distributor, with a standard 12 Volt coil. One day your 1970 350 wouldn't start so you changed the coil, then you noticed smoke from the resistor wire and it still won't fire up, just cranks and cranks? What has changed, prior to it not starting? I assume it ran great the day before (or last time you drove it) Many times our vehicles start having problems after we do something to them, like me power washing my engine then it starts to misfire due to water inside the dist cap.
