bettare
I am trying to replace a switch on the passenger side door jam that operates the dome light on my 71 monte carlo. I can take it out however it does not have a usual connector. The wire seems to be part of the switch. Should I just try to pry it off? Rob Peters
Gary, First off, a big welcome to the First Generation Monte Carlo Club website. We hope you like what you see here and decide to become a dues paying member of the club. I have never removed one of these but i sm sure one of our members will chime in with an answer to your question. rob
Mo's70MCs
Gary, As far as I know there's two types the spade and the bullet type connectors. All my '70s came with a bullet type and they're both made to unplug from its wire lead. If they're stock you should be able to pull the lead apart. MCfan
Gary, Just use a deep socket of the proper size to unscrew the pin switch from the door jamb. Pull the wires out about two inches (they should have at least that much slack) and unplug their connector (either spade or bayonet type) from the pin switch. Plug the connector into the new pin switch and screw it back in place in the door jamb. The photo below is from the passenger side of a '70 with courtesy lights. If you don't have courtesy lights, there may be only one wire plugged into the pin switch. The pin switch on the driver's side has dual spade connectors. bettare
Thanks all for your replies, I have the bullet type connector on my 71 Monte. I have owned the car since 1971. It was our first new car when we got married. So this switch is original. I backed off the switch about a eight inch and now the done light works great. However, I am concerned the switch will work its way back down again and the dome light will stay on. I guess I will try to disconnect it again, now that I know I have to put more pressure on it to disconnect and pick up a new one. Any suggestions besides OPG. There shipping is so expensive. MCfan
Guy, You can get that exact switch from the Parts Place Inc for $6 plus shipping (you won't know how much until they ship but it can't be much). Here's a link to a picture of the DOOR JAMB SWITCH WITH SINGLE ROUND TERMINAL and the part number is EL6863Z. Based on several unpleasant experiences, OPG is the LAST place I go for replacement parts! Good luck.

bettare
Follow up to bullet door jam switch. I took out the door jam switch and put a piece of tape on the lead wire so it would not go back into the hole in the door. I then took a pair of pliers and held the wire where it is soldered in the switch and gently pulled the switch and out came the bullet connector. Then I just reversed the process with the new switch. Pretty easy replacement.
