Franko69ss
I signed up here because the 69RS/SS 396 Camaro I bought 2yrs ago supposedly has a (as I was told) high performance 454 from a 70 monte SS. He also said it had CRN on the block. The only thing I found on the block was "hi perf" on the drivers side rear of the block below the headers.. I did read a couple of topics here about how to tell the difference but was still unsuccessful in finding anything. I'm guessing I'll need to remove some things like the power steering pump and altinator etc. any suggestions would be much appreciated. We're also looking for a date coded 396 block to put in the Camaro. The nice 396/375 engine was removed some years ago along with the original TH400 and the 12 posi. It has a built up TH350 and a BOP 8.2 limited slip diff w/373's. thanks in advance for any info
1970mcss
The CRN stamping is on the right side front of the block. You should be able to see it with out removing anything. Good Luck
Murphy
Here's a sweet option...........427 https://phoenix.craigslist.org/evl/pts/d/boltblock-copos-b1/6263268735.html
Franko69ss
Thanks also if this is a monte SS motor and when I find the correct block for my Camaro, is this worth anything more than $1500 or so to any of these monte SS owners? Thanks for the response.
Franko69ss
Wow! Nice 427 block. That would be sweet. I'll call to see what the deal is and I'll speak to a couple of machine shops around to see what it'll cost to finish the job. When it's all said and done I'll be into it for about $12000. Thanks for the site

Franko69ss
I'm unable to at this time but as soon as I get back to the house I'll go over the motor and find any numbers I can. I know on the lower drivers side it is cast into the block "hi perf"
overdrive
I'm pretty sure all passenger car 454s had the "hi perf" cast into the block. I'll check a rebuilders book that I have. Â Dan
Franko69ss
I could not find anything on the block but GM8 in the rear where the block meets the bell housing and the "hi perf" "pass". I'm thinking it's just a 2bolt main 454 truck motor from the late 70'

Franko69ss
I'm not sure what that means "decked" . On the rear of the block where it bolts to the bell housing, at the center is where it says "GM8" then a few inches to the drivers side, it almost looks like something was removed from that spot, like hammer marks almost. Not sure what that's all about. What I've been reading is "hi perf" and "pass" means that it came from a passenger/truck suburban type vehicle. Again, not sure how accurate that info is either. If money wasn't a problem I'd just buy a new motor, tranny and rear end.....
Franko69ss
I was told it was a 454 from a 70 monte SS 360hp with a cam and spiced up to about 450hp. I guess i should leave enough alone and just drive it till it dies. I was thinking I'd sell the motor to a monte owner after I found a correct dated motor..
