rear end gear with more bite

stickshift

Recommended Posts

hello everyone! I'm new to the wed site but i have been a member for a while. My Monte is the tangerine colored Monte featured for monte of the month for Nov. It is a 72 with a small block, Rock Crusher four speed, and 3:55 rear end. My question is, when I take off it is very hesitant. Could my problem be that my rear end gear is too high? I was thinking about getting a 4:11, but I heard that a 3:90, or 3:73 would be better for the street.

Stock big blocks came with a 3.42, a 3.55 should be sufficent to move that car. 3.73's are the mid gear between cruising and drag that guys like, but I would look for another answer besides rear ring gear. It might be an ignition/fuel problem to where you are bogging off the line.

they used the M-20 in monte's for the lower first gear

what do you mean by "hesitant"???

that 3.55 should be great for the street

stock big block monte's came with 2.56 (1970), 3.31, 2.73

all 4 spd's that I have seen, came with 3.31

although...you could have ordered others

is your clutch real touchy?

yeah.. i have 3.55's.. I think they're a little bit too much for the street IMHO.. I think a 3.3x would have been a better choice. (I stepped up to 3.55 from a 2.73)
