I bet Alex will answer this, I have figured out everything but the last number

c=chevy

12=december

17=17th

B=buffalo

2=????

 

the car was built the first week of january 1970, just can't figure out which posi-unit

now sam if you would hae done your homework like i did you would have visited the tech info page to see what i wrote up a while back on this lol

The 1970 Monte Carlo is a year that is unique to the first generation of Monte Carlo’s. It is the only year that Chevrolet had the three-digit rear axle ratio identifier “CCH for example all of them started with C for Chevrolet” and the only year that they had a month and day code “01 23 known as January twenty third” for the Monte Carlo. The information that will follow will be from several sources and they will very in accuracy. So believe only what you can confirm as the truth. Two out of the three books are very similar to each other and are approved by general motors but they do not guarantee their accuracy.

I did do my home work, that's how I figured out most of it, but there isn't a number stamped for the posi, and it is a factory posi axle, even says it on my build sheet, I just wanted to know which unit was in it

A few questions I have: confused

 

1)Is there a better picture of the the rearend diagram in the tech section,and does it show any specific details.

 

2) I still have not been able to find my code on my axle,does any one have a picture of the location???? I've looked all along the axle tube and can't find it.

 

3) How to tell the difference between a posi carrier and a non posi carrier just by looking?? Does any one have a picture of the two side by side??

 

Bear with me I'm learning.

hey mike,

 

if the axle tube was stamped "some were not for some reason" it will be located 6-12 inches from the center housing on the passenger side tube on the transmission side "front part of the axle tube. it will be hard to read with all the road grime but some brake clean and a scotch bright pab or a wire brush and it will be viewable.

 

to tell if a posi is in the housing jack the car up and spin one tire if both go in the same direction then there is a posi unit installed. as for if it was factory and if it was stamped it will have one of these stamped on the tube with the code:

 

D= Dana Positraction Differential E= Eaton Positraction Differential

W= Warren Motive

 

if it was not stamped at all you will have to open up the differential cover to see by looking for gm part numbers on the gears and unit

I was doing some reading and found out that a posi carrier will have a clutch and springs and a non posi or open differential will not ....sound right? Also read that a burned out clutch pack will make the differential behave like a non posi because the springs will not have enough holding pressure...also sound right?? If so when I jack up the car will a burned out clutch pack still behave like a posi, being that the amount of human power turning the wheel is much less than the power of the engine with wheels in contact with the road??? And Is it a dificult job to rebuild the carrier if it is burned out? I have a neighbor that races cars says this something we could do in a day,but I'm not one who likes to impose on others ....I like to attempt things myself first.( Hi Doug...my wife would like to borrow a cup of sugar and uh...could you rebuild my rearend while I'm here???? :rolleyes:laughlollol )Let me know,

Mike you are correct on all accounts but depending on the type of carrier it may not be rebuildable. Eatons are rebuildable Auburns may not be. eatons use a clutch pad "friction discs" and springs to stay engauged. Auburns i beleive use cones or another method.

 

to rebuild a unit requires a case spreader to remove and reinstall the carrier "this aides in not damaging the bearings on the carrier" you will also need a axle bearing puller "unless your housing has c-clip eliminator axle bearings which you will need to take to a machine shop to remove as they are pressed on the axle shafts.

 

parts needed for a complete rearend rebuild

 

2 wheel bearings

2 wheel bearing seals "unless yours has the c-clip eliminator bearings"

1 inner pinion bearing "also comes with a new race"

1 outer pinion bearing "also comes with a new race"

1 crush sleeve "available at the dealership"

1 pinion seal

1 posi traction rebuild kit " this should come with the new carrier bearings and races clutch disc pack and springs, shims and a few other things" check to make sure it has all you need in it.

1 cover gasket "try to keep old one in good condition and take it with you to make sure the gasket is the correct size.

 

90 weight gear oil

gm positraction additive "available at dealership"

 

there is a plug on the passenger side of the housing. that is the fill hole. fill it up to the plug hole to where a little runs out the hole.

 

follow the directions exactly on the posi additive container. this will make sure you rebuilt carrier will last a long time.
