Guest glk
Hello, New guy here. I am sure someone must have a solution to this problem. A while ago I was unable to start my 71 Monte while in park. Not a power problem or battery as the stereo and lights worked fine. Just nothing when I turned the key. After trying everything, I moved the shift lever back and forth while turning the key and it started when I moved the lever out of park. I kept doing that and it just kept getting worse. Now I have to move the gear lever all the way from park to drive and back. Sometimes it turns over when I am in reverse; sometimes not. Does anybody know what the problem is? I was thinking of converting the column shift to a B&M Unimatic shifter on the floor. Would that solve the problem? Thanks

Sam (Bones)
check/adjust the shift linkage first, they can slip a little at the adjustment point under the car, loosen the bolt adjust it so it pushes the rod up to the steering column a little farther
Guest glk
Thanks for the suggestions. A couple of additional questions: Is the Neutral Safety Switch the same for a turbo 350 transmission as it is for a TH400? Where is it located? As far as the linkage, how do I get at it? Wish there were pictures to reference. Has anyone converted the column shift to the floor shifter?
Big Jim
The neutral safety switch is at the bottom of the column at the firewall. A couple of screws holds it in place.
Monteman1971
The linkage is under the car on the drivers side. You'll see a series of metal bars that connect between the transmission and the steering column....the rod off the column has an adjusting nut. Loosen the nut, adjust the column all the way in park and tighten it. And welcome to the forum!!!!!
