  1. Did you have the trans out? I have seen this when guys pull the trans and let the engine tilt baclk and the cap hits the firewall.

    Are you sure you built it? Sorry for the political humor.
  4. Crate motors from GM, this is a company who builds tons of engines that last for 2-300000 miles every day. I would spend my money with them before I take a chance on a local shop who builds 2-3 of these big inch motors a year at best.

  6. Can you even buy dex2 now a days? You can use DEX6 it is backwards compatable which means you can use it in anything that calls for a DEXRON type ATF.
  7. Bowman or Mechanics Choice carry a lot of GM hardware too.
  8. I would call COMP and ask the techie guy how much vacumn you should expect. If you get to low the power brakes will suffer.
  9. I think if you can pull the engine you can do all the work yourselve. Just do some research on the cam install and the valve body, those are going to be the two hardest jobs. If this is something you don't think you have the tools or experiance to tackle just give him the whole car.

  11. You want a set of cargo coils for a el camino. Just make sure your shocks still have a couple of inches of extension left.
  12. With a 496 there will be little that will help wheel spin other than a light right foot. Believe it or not but a 3.73 gear might help get the car moving easier with less throttle.
  13. Yes all the LS6 goodies will bolt right on a LS5. You might want to rethink the cam though because the LS6 cam is a solid lifter cam and not the best choice for anything that will sit for any period of time. It will fatigue the valves springs that are open, and require periodic adjustments. I had this setup in my Monte for the first 10 years I owned it, now I have the 990 rectangle port heads, a Edelbrock Performer RPM cam and intake on it.

  15. Cool, that sure beats a bad cam. I tend to shy away from Accel parts, never had a whole lot of luck with them.
  16. I hate to mention this but check for a cam wiping a lobe, pull both covers and watch each rocker arm for equal movement.

  18. AMEN to that. Sure you can build a big inch small block but like Al said it will not be on the cheap.

  20. Really, I had a bout with em in May/June and they kicked my big azz but nothing like Rob has been going through. It is good to see Rob has posted, may he contiune on the mend and be up and about in a short time.

Well from my experiance as a old fart, back in the day 3.73's were fine with a non overdrive trans but now a days after years of driving with a overdriven trans it sounds like it is screaming all the time. My advice is if you plan on driving this car on the freeway a lot then drop down to 3.42 or the 3.08 gear set or plan on doing either a gear vendors overdrive or 4 speed trans swap or live with it at 3400 RPM.
