  1. That's awesome! Thanks Bob, Vaughn & Larry. I think these measurements, plus the date code info, clarifies the issue beyond a reasonable doubt. I admit my error of conclusion in my earlier research. I'm sorry for any confusion my previous posts may have caused.
  2. Still like to get some of the SS454 owners to post this measurement taken from their LL compressors.........
  3. I made an interesting discovery today. While cleaning a LL Compressor, I noticed what appears to be a date code on the pump housing (on flat surface opposite the filter inlet). It's 4 numbers similar to the date coding on other parts, such as quadrajet carbs, but with a space between the 3rd & 4th number. I have four compressors, 2 short and 2 long, and they all have a code, but with some minor variations. If they are date codes similar to those used on other components, they would break down this way..... Long tanks; 252 4 (252nd day of '64) 010-9 (10th day of '69) Short tanks; 345-9 (345th day of '69) 340 66 (340th day of '66) the only one with a 2 digit "year". I was told it was a Cadillac pump when purchased. I believe all these dates would fall within the range of years that the G67 option was offered. If these are in fact date codes, it adds another level of accuracy to a "numbers matching" car. I recently purchased two of the units, even though they were labeled as 1960s compressors, because they were priced right and complete with mounting brackets.....always good for parts, right? It turns out one of them is the 345-9 short unit and the brackets are correct for a Monte SS454! This may help clarify the correct length question posed in another post here......
  4. Info on the correct tank length can be confusing. Recent ebay auctions have muddied the water more . I have researched this before and was convinced the longer tank was correct. Unfortunately, my '70SS had the inner fenders replaced when restored and the original holes are not there. Those with original tanks installed, or tanks installed where original inner fenders (with holes) were used can help us out. All other measurements being the same, the difference in length can be measured in the length of the "inner" canister between the pump housing and the end cap. See the pictures below; the shorter canister measures 8 1/8" from "lip to lip". The longer canister measures 10 1/8". It would help us out if you members with installed original compressors would take this measurement and post it here. Thanks for your time and assistance!
  5. Wow, what a great find! Congrats on the legitimacy of your SS. Every drive will be a little sweeter now..... Beautiful car.....
  6. Room reserved (15th-19th) and event registration done.......Yippee!
  7. Got the classics out for their monthly drive (weather permitting) today. After a mid January snow, most roads were cindered. Now we've had sunshine and high temps in the 50s for six days and the county got out and swept up the "gravel". All smiles!
  8. I'm thinking he saw the handwriting on the wall and realized the potential problems down the road with selling that way. I hope he's more honest if he relists it....
  9. The saddest part, to me, is that the duped buyer might eventually end up on our sight and find this thread....and that's how he'll find out he was ripped off! Of course, he will return to the seller to complain and will be told about the disclaimer. The auction description is intentionally misleading and the disclaimer makes it acceptable in the sellers eyes. Sad to see how often this happens on ebay. I only hope the prospective buyers will find our sight before the auction ends......
  10. Well, the Holy Grail has been found! This 1970 SS454 Monte 4spd car on ebay; Holy Grail Found! Oh, never mind that it has a "fresh engine" installed and no build sheet found, he's a dealer so he must be legit . Plus, he's the expert who has seen TWO 454SS 4spd Montes in 26 years..... Enjoy!
  11. Notice no one's driving their 4-speed.......
  12. Sounds like everyone is having a successful "preparation weekend"! Yesterday was a full day of work on my Monte, also; new steering wheel, upgraded burlwood dash installed (thanks Doug!), electrical glitches solved and some minor parts replaced. Today.....wash and wax and interior cleaning. Still trying to figure out a/c electrical/vacuum issues :-( BTW guys....I have a large cooler with extra room if you need it. Almost time!!!!!!
  13. I've had a house full of company that leaves tomorrow. Then less than a week to get the Monte ready......YIKES! Can't wait to see everyone for a "car vacation".
  14. Hmmmm, wonder if I'll get to all the improvement I planned to do after last years meet?
  15. Yes, interior is blue, but on all SS454 cars the steering column and wheel are black. I already purchased a repop black steering wheel (from OER) and it's nice. Still need the shroud and burlwood insert, though.
  16. That guy in Phoenix has advertised some good stuff, but I really like the stock '70 steering wheel. BTW, I'm glad that mirror isn't a picture frame......I would'nt want the picture that's in it!
  17. Does anyone else sell the burlwood steering wheel insert besides OPGI? Most other catalogs list a cherry wood insert along with the colors. I don't think cherry wood is the same as original burlwood. Correct me if I'm wrong????? I would use OPGI as a last resort, or pm me if you have an excellent original one for sale.......
  18. For repairing rusted areas and SMALL rust holes, I have used the following technique; 1) sand or grind away as much rust as possible 2) apply a rust converter (like POR15 Prep & Ready) 3) fill as needed with All Metal body filler 4) prime (I used everything from primer/surfacer to canned primer depending on the situation) 5) paint. For any rust holes larger that about a dime, I would patch with a metal panel. I did this work on my '55 in the early 90s and it has held up great with no problems.
  19. Interestingly, that engine was made on the same date as mine!
  20. IMO, 97 from LaPine to Klamath Falls is a snoozer....plus there are a lot of semi trucks that use that two lane route (a bad combination). 31 is narrow, but no traffic.
  21. Woohoo, love this trip planning! I was thinking of going from Bend down 97 to LaPine, take 31 to Lakeview and pick up 395 there. Really enjoyed 31 when I drove it last October. Open to Aaron's route, though. If you guys can plan an overnight in Bend, I envision a mini cruise-in / cookout at my house that evening
  22. Welcome! Looking forward to pics and more details of your MCSS. Post a picture of your build sheet so we can see the specifics.... Again, WELCOME!
  23. If it has the correct SS equip; http://www.firstgenmc.com/tech/ss454.shtml and is matching numbers, it should certainly be worth that $$
  24. Don't work too hard or tear too much stuff out looking for the build sheet......as I understand it they never turn up in Flint-built cars. Good luck (and let's see some more pics!)
  25. I painted a car using PPG 2-stage urethane back in 1995. The color coats didn't have isocyanates, but all but one clear coat did. Fresh air respirators where required for isocyanates. PPG NCT Clear did not have them and only required an auto paint face mask filter. I will be painting my Monte next couple years and hope to find a replacement urethane clear without isocyanates.
