71BLACK_MC
A few weeks ago, I tried starting my vehicle (with a newly purchased battery) and while turning it over, I heard a bang-bang every time the starter engaged the flywheel. I thought that the flywheel may be bad after all these years but then the battery ran down while trying to crank it over. I jumped the battery and the car then would crank with no bang-bang from the flywheel. I then took the alternator to the shop to have it evaluated and it was good. Then I started reading the posts on the FGMC website and saw that it may be the voltage regulator so I changed it and the car cranked with no problems and without jumping it. So, last weekend I went to crank it back up and now the bang-bang continues. Any suggestions out there????? Help... Tom
ripleydale
Did anything change before you started to hear the bang? (Besides the new battery).
71BLACK_MC
Let me clarify something...When I said bang-bang, this is the flywheel/starter clinging together when engaged as if there was low power from the battery. And before this happened the generator light stayed on but went out when I changed the voltage regulator.
monte70car
Thomas what type of starter do you have on the motor is it a stock style starter? If you can pull the starter gear out of the started and engage the flexplate you can see if there is to much gap or not enough gap between the started gear and flexplate. I had an issue where my starter was not engaging the flexplate good and broke off two teeth and the flexplate and starter would make a grinding noise. I replaced the flexplate with a new one reshim the started and now its a smooth start up. I run a MSD mini starter on my big block.
stangeba
If you have a battery charger, charge the battery fully, if not try to borrow one. To me it sounds like you have a weak battery perhaps from a drain like, the trunk light stays on, the radio or amp stays on, or the new battery is defective. Do you have a volt meter? Good tools to have, ask for them for your birthday or Christmas.
