I did a total brake rebuild (rotors, calipers, pads, booster, etc.) on my 72 Monte. Now the fricken' brake light on the dash stays on!! mad.gif Does anybody know how to it to go out besides taking the bulb out? Thanks!

i'm not sure of this but, maybe there is a switch that is operated by the brake pedal lever that might be stuck keeping the light on.

Hello McCall72 I believe that your problem with the brake lite in the dash is turned on by the BRAKE DISTIBUTION SWITCH . aka (proportioning valve ). this is not uncommon when the system has been serviced. the switch needs to be reset.to reset the switch apply moderate presure to the brake pedal. this should equalize the presure differential and clear the lite .if not you may try to bleed the whole system again .also be sure to check that the emergency brake is not partially set and causing the lamp to burn. i hope this helps you McCall . this procedure should be in most auto repair manuals mike

OK im the brake specialist here!!! :-) ok or maybe i just had the most problems, anyhow have a friend help u bleed the system, what u need to do is open up either a caliper on the front or a wheel cylinder in the rear depending on which part u had opened up, anyhow with the bleeder open u have to stomp the brake pedal really hard, it may take a few times but the light should go out, if it doenst try doing the oposite end that u were on, if u still cant get it u can take the distribution block out and manually recenter the valve, i think u can do this by removing the peice of the block that screws into it and the wire attaches to it, then u should be able to stick something in it to move the piston to the center, it works by the piston grounding out the wire, in the worst case u can take the block off and center it from the rear brake line port, post back and let us know how its going....

I had a problem with mine recently and thought I was going to get into big bucks. My brake light kept going off and comming on. I bled the brakes starting at the one furthest from the Master Cylinder (Right Rear) then the one next furthest (left Rear) followed by the right front and then the left front. Low and behold the light was off when I was done. I took it for a test drive and the *!#*$%#@!#^**^#$@ light started going on and off again. I found out the wire from the emergency brake switch had come off and was touching ground now and then causing the problem. It more than likely will not be your problem but it is a quick and easy check. Look at the emergency brake pedal assy. You will have to get on your back under the dash with a flashlight. The switch is mounted at the top of the emergency brake pedal and ratchet assy.
