Mike Brichta
A guy here at work stopped me this morning and asked me if I knew of a good place to buy an automatic transmission for his 72 Chevy truck. I don't know anything about the truck but he told me it now has a manual transmission and he wants to convert it to automatic TH350 or TH400. Does anyone know what kind of transmission that truck has and if it would work in our 70-72 Montes? Thanks!! Mike
cny first gen 71
Did he say it is a 3 speed or 4 speed? 3 on the tree was pretty comment on them. Climb under and get a look at it if you can see how shifter mounts if it is a 4 speed.

Mike Brichta
He says it is a floor shift truck and 2 wheel drive. He is going to check to see if it is a 3 or 4 speed and let me know. If it is a 4 speed I will let you know. Thanks!! Mike
cny first gen 71
He don't know if its a three speed or four speed, hasn't he ever drove the truck. Is it for sale by any chance?
Mike Brichta
I know. He said he hasn't driven the truck in over 10 years and doesn't remember. I will wait to see what he says. If it is a 4 speed will it work in our cars? He wants to fix it up for his girlfriend and she can't drive a manual transmission.
cny first gen 71
It depends on what transmission it is I guess if its a top loader (shifter on top) I don't think it will.
Paul Bell
If it's a floor shift, it's probably a four speed. The truck can use a Turbo 350 or 400. A 700R would give him a four speed automatic. The crossmember may need to be replaced or at least moved and the driveshaft length might be changed also.
