MC1970U
Bought factory covers for my wife's 70 a few years ago and they are already badly fading to purple. It has spent most of its time garaged since the interior was completely gone through. It looked awesome when it was first done but now it looks terrible. I live in the northwest and the days the car has seen out of doors have been pretty mild. I don't get it? Trying to make headway on the car but seems like I'm not making any progress. You guys have any ideas on what might be going on? S
Mike Brichta
What brand did you purchase?
MC1970U
Since I don't know if it's appropriate to say here, until I hear back from the company, I sent you a pm. I did some research paid good money and got what I thought was going to help me with a quality restoration. S
RealRed70
Are these covers made of that nylon type material also known as parachute material. If so they tend to do that.
MCfan
I have had the same problem with the black cloth bucket seats in my '70 SS. I don't know for sure that they are replacement seat covers but I doubt the factory interior would fade to purple like these have. Since they have no tears or snags and I doubt that new replacements would not fade the same way over time, I am leaning strongly toward refurbishing them using fabric paint. SEM, Eastwood and Duplicolor all make spray paint/dye for vinyl and fabric but I am leaning toward a product that is made exclusively for fabric: Upholstery Fabric Spray Paint They claim it is a paint, not a dye, and that it will not change the softness of the fabric. One thing they caution about is not using their standard product on shiny, stain-protected or water-proofed materials but to use their Waterproof Outdoor Formula instead. My current faded seat covers are certainly more slick than knappy so I may order the waterproof formula. They also say to never shake the can because it creates air bubbles. Hopefully, some member(s) have tried these upholstery paints on fabric interiors and can let us know what to expect.
RealRed70
A friend of mine has the cloth seat covers in his 70 SS. They have turned purple. I told him to spray them with SEM Landau Black. As of right now he is still putting up with the purple. It would be so easy to just spray them. The spray works great on faded carpets also.
