Guest
Hey Hey Yea I know this has been brought up before but lets do it again. Anybody that installed a 700R in there Montes what did you have to do wuth the cross member and driveshaft and if anybody out there make a drive shaft that ready to go in (custom made) I have bowtie overdrive web address so we know about them and there cross member any other web address that might help in doing the swap as far as the drive shaft. Bowties overdrives looks like the better kit for the TV cable(but they are the only ones I found) any onfo you might have will help I think Dave
monte70car
dave we have 2 700r4 trans from bowtie overdrive one in the monte and the other in the nomad. the one in the monte we moved the cross menber back in the frame and used a 350 driveshaft which is the right lenght. monte70car
from what the drive shaft shop said when the u-joints were put in the 350 yoke is a lot strong then the 700 yoke the 350 yoke will fit.
JOHNR
Hi what 350 driveshaft is that? from a nova? I was told you have to cut the driveshaft or custom build a new one. I plan on doing mine this way it would save me a lot of money and time. Let me know John I did meet up with a guy in pomona he gave me his info SUPER T Transmission specialist Hi-pro gm's, Fords, Parts 909-620-8689 He quoted me 800. for a 700r4
alex's72fgmc
ok guys the th-350 drive shaft for a monte will not work with the 700 4r but it will work with the 200 4r with out modification. for the 700 to work you will either need to shorten the shaft a little by taking it to a machine shop or ordering a custom one from dennys drive shaft or another company. I dont know if a shaft from a diffent car will work but it would be cheaper than having one altered or getting a custom one  alex
monte70car
the 350 drive shafts we used were from montes, and we didnt get them cut down.
JOHNR
Ok thats what I originally thought. I will probably have one modified to work. One thing I do know for sure is that a 700r4 can be modified to keep it from wearing out too soon. The trans guy I left the info on said he does it to all his transmissions. For that price I will probably get two of them. The only trans thats better is the new one from gm the one they call bullet proof its run about 2000.00 and has a bigger bell housing than the 700r4. tO INSTALL THIS PUPPIE YOU MAY HAVE TO MODIFY THE FIREWALL. I HAVE THE MAGAZINE with the add it gives all the specs on it. Thanks for sharing guys! John
monte70car
hey john try bowtie overdrive web site is www.700r4.com he is out in cal and gives a 1 year warrtany on his trans.
JOHNR
Hi Yeah I hered of them, they might be a bit pricey for me. Most of these place in CA. Have a lot of overhead so it bumps the prices way up in some cases. The paddock is one that has some decent prices but other things are expensive. Real estate in CA. is going up so is the lease of buildings. Not a good thing for montees. John
Guest
Hey guys! I have a question for the 700R4 kick down cable. I bought my tranny from Mad Dog's Trannies in Florida and the cable I got just was too short. Does anyone have a quick fix or replacement I can get for the kick down cable? Im having a hard time locating one. Thanks! Also, I just switched out my TH350 for a 700R4 and I had to get the driveshaft cut and balanced. It wasnt really that costly to do it and I found a place in Banning, CA that did it in one day! It only cost about $175.00 to get it done too. I dont have the name of the place right now but I'll be sure to post it here when I do. Good Luck doing yours!

Dans '70 Z20
Dave, Thought you could benefit from this info from other forum. All the street/track racers on Long Island use 'em. Â These guys www.fbperformance.com suggested two options to me. Â 1- A low ratio Turbo 400 with 2:75/1:57/1 gearing instead of 2:48/1:48/1. This will make a 3:31 rear seem like a 3:73 of the line but you will end up with the same final drive ratio in third gear as stock. So highway speeds will be bearable. He says this optional "low gear" set-up is especially important in cars weighing over 3800lbs (We're all there) to make up for the extra weight. Â 2- He also makes a C200R which will handle up to 500HP that will handle the torque of a big block. These are the same length to crossmember as a Turbo 400 (27"). In most cases you can use original holes for cross member, or may have to ovalize holes a bit. (He just swapped a Turbo 400 for this tranny in a 70 Corvette and it bolted up to stock crossmember holes) You will need either a slightly longer yolk or a longer drive shaft. This tranny has 2:75/1:57/1/overdrive so has same benefit as low gear Turbo 400 with an overdrive to boot. Â Important: Alot of you mentioned using a 700R4. They are great for small blocks but not the best choice for big blocks due to torque generated. The problem is they have such a high first gear (3.06/1.62/1.00/0.68) that with all the torque of a big block 2nd gear will always hit hard. Often, second gear is blown out b/c it gets beat up. Â This is why he recommended the C200R if I was interested in an overdrive tranny. Check out your resources to validate .....but it sounds logical. Â By the way Street/Strip Turbo 400 $950 Â Street/Strip Turbo 400 $950+495(low ratio) - $1445 Â C200R Street/Strip $1695 Â For a $250 difference between "low ratio" T400 and a C200R I say go with the overdrive. http://www.shiftworks.com sells kits to convert factory horseshoe shifter to a 4 speed set-up. Guest
Hey Hey Thanks for the info Dan we got to do something soon (we my go with a rebuilt 400 from advance auto around 600.00 with converter) Dave
Dans '70 Z20
That sounds like a steal. See if they have a low ratio version. It would be a big benefit do to the weight of our cars. Like I said in earlier post, final drive ratio (3rd gear) would still be the same. Â Dan
Guest
John R, As some of you on here know I really don't care for The Paddock. I know for fact that the owner/CEO of the paddock closed the FL store over the memorial day weekend of 2001 without warning or notice to the staff! Then he did the exact same thing to the Cali store over labor day weekend that same year! How do I know this for fact you ask? From april of 1997 to oct of 2001 I was the Paddock's "tech department" so if you called and pressed 2 for tech during that time it was my desk you got routed to thats not say I could get to every call before the system timed out and disconneced the call! On average I had 200+ calls a day coming in! I had access to just about every aspect of the companies computer system and could track just about everything from stock transfers to salespersons comissions, I did way more than talk to customers, I helped the sales staff and store mgr's when they had problems or couldn't access info! I also did a lot of new product development for them as well. I did just about everthing but sales. Chuck West MGR of the FL store was/is a friend so is/was Faith Denny of the Cali store. I warned them both something was going on for months ahead of time because I could see from my reports that they were being sent less and less stock and that a lot of their backorders were being sent from Indiana. I did not hide my dislike for the way the people in those stores were treated nor did I hide the fact that I actively kept them informed of what was going on! Yes it cost me my job! I fully expected it way before it happened! What the owner"I can't put his name here for obvious reasons" did was dirty business, he went behind peoples backs and sent other people to have the locks changed when the stores were closed and put a notice of closier on the door for them to find upon returning to "work" following the holiday! To me that was just wrong! Its up to you who to spend your money with, for obvious reasons mine all goes to anyone but the paddock. Phil
Wow, what a story thanks for the insight on these guys. About how many people lost their this way? Similiar stuff goes on in the hospital I work at, people show up for the job are told that their position has been eliminated and then they are "escorted" by security to the door, one guy had to send for his stuff because they did not allow him enough time to empty his desk and I'm talking about people with over 20 years in. Guest
Phil, both stores was about 55 people cut without warning or severence packages, no option to move to Indiana and they had to get the police involved to retrieve personal items from the buildings!!!!! Some had been there 20+ years one guy gave up a 17 year postion with a national magazine to work for them for 2.5 years!! Don
