Lighter Ground termination

Recommended Posts

I don't have a schematic and was wondering if anyone knew where the lighter ground was terminated at. The center lead reads 12 volts to ground but the negitive lead shows open when I ohm it out. I'd want to tear as little apart as possible to repair this. Any clues?

It's a common, spliced ground for a few things in the dash, as you can see in the schematic. I'd check to see if the ground wire is attached near the parking brake area, under the dash. If everything else works, I'd just run a separate ground wire to the lighter plug, if you're looking for easy.

One other thing, are you measuring with your meter at the wires on the connector itself (behind dash), or from the front side of the dash at/in the lighter socket? Reason I ask, is sometimes there may not be good ground contact with the outer shell from what I remember. Make sure you check from the back side connector, so you're not chasing a wiring issue that may not exist.

Picture from my 71 Monte, of the ground mentioned, attached to the parking brake bracket.

This also shows the "Parking Brake" switch. I forgot to hook it back up one time and drove several miles with the PB on!
