WM & Derek Hall
Fellas, Anyone know if the 72 454's, CRW series came with the nylon coated timing gears that GM was notorious for? My 72 has only 30K miles on it and I would hate to pass that nylon thru the passages if that is the case. This engine has never been down, but I will gladly put on new gears and chain if the plastic is present. What have any of you found previously? Sam (Bones)
I'd be willing to bet it has the nylon gear, even though it only has 30,000 on the clock, nylon gets brittle after time
wallaby
I think all the OEM gears were the nylon type. It was a way to make them quiet. The chain itself was also different; it looks more like a toothed belt. If you want to eliminate the nylon, an iron cam gear is available for the stock-type chain setup (you still need to replace both gears and the chain). Or you can get a roller timing set which uses a more traditional chain that looks like a wide bicycle chain.

WM & Derek Hall
Thanks for all the feedback fella's. I just had a feeling it had the nylon gears. Now to get motivated to do this and other things while I am at it.
