  1. As far as I know there were no "tips" on the end of a 72's exhaust even with the 454. They had tailpipes only with a turndown at the bumper. You could get away with the tips but it wouldn't be "correct" if your car is 100% original/restored. Steve
  2. My vote is side mount for 1971. From what I know, 1970 were top mount and 71/72 were all side mount. I believe the Delco code was R89. There is a company that reproduce the battery but their kind of expensive (I think $260). For most car shows as long as you have a "Delco" battery you shouldn't lose any points. My 2 cents, Steve
  3. Looks great! I have the same pump so now I know what the pressure is...Thanks! Steve
  4. As far as I know the gray on those shocks looks correct and that's the color I have used in the past. There are a lot of company's that sell the "shock gray" so it should be easy enough to find. For the inside of the rims, I always thought they were painted a similar color gray on the inside (as the shocks) and the outside was sprayed the more aluminum color with the overspray coming through the holes in the rim. I always have masked the rim off to avoid the over spray because I like the look better. My 2 cents, Steve
  5. I was a purist for many years, I've owned a few limited production Montes....never a For Sale sign but they all were sold. I've found that as long as the work is top quality that people are willing to pay for them even if you don't want to sell it........ So in the biginning, every thing was 100% stock but as I grow tired of building myself another car, I've been making small modifications to personalize them hoping that no one would want them but that hasn't worked out either. My current Monte is a 1971 SS, numbers matching and was with the same owner since 1974. I'm making modifications to my liking in hopes that no one else wants it. Don't get me wrong, I won't "hurt" the car, if I ever want to go back to total stock I will but for now I'm living by the rule...."It's my car so I'll make it what I want". My 2 cents Steve
  6. From what I know they were an option on 71's and 72's and standard on the 72 "Customs". I put them on all my cars....love the look. Steve
  7. Harbor Freight has an inexpensive HVLP gun for $89. I use it all the time to spray primer and sometimes even paint. It works great!!! Steve
  8. The inside demensions of a Chevelles wheel well are the same. Both cars have exactly the same inner well. The outter well is only different at the opening which may make it appear that it has more space but it really doesn't. I've modified the Chevelle outter to fit the Monte because they don't offer a reproduction of the Montes. Steve
  9. Wow Bruce, those pictures were great...and priceless!!!! Love your car!!!! Steve
  10. That was a great story.....My first Monte cost $300 in 1980. It was only a small block but when your 18 and it's your first car I had plenty of fun with it picking on the big kids......lol. Steve
  11. Here's mine...cheap Thrush mufflers with 2 1/2 inch pipes and a cross over. http://s79.photobucket.com/albums/j140/monteman1971/?action=view&current=Cap0001.flv Steve
  12. That intake is good till 5500 rpm. it's a good piece but a little dated. There are manifolds that flow better like the Performer RPM or the Air Gap RPM. But the manifold is easy to change. If your considering it, start watching e-bay now. There are always a few on there and being that their really not a "wear" item you can pick one up cheap. I think you really need to consider that carb your running too...Time for something more appropriate.....lol. Steve
  13. And yet black wasn't a standard color offered on the 1972 Monte????? Steve
  14. Hey Phil, My fenders and hood are steel but there are a couple of places that make them. I don't suggest "Bodyworks" if you come across their stuff. It's all very ruff. With my engine out I haven't had a chance to really look into my trans but i will as soon as I'm up and running... Steve
  15. I've got mine, documented and numbers matching......I've made some changes as you can see but I'm going with Leo's motto of "It's my car and I'll do what I want"......lol. I'm going to drive the wheels off it....... Steve
  16. Get one for a Chevelle, same thing as a Monte but it bolts directly to the frame and eliminates the original rubber mounts. It's a much more "positive" mount. Steve
  17. That's not the point...if they sell it as "correct" it should be "correct" These reproduction parts guys need to be held responsible for misrepresenting these parts.....What about all the time and effort to do a correct restoration and now to take out the tank and send it back? It's just not right. If they knew about it, the buyers should be made aware so that they can make their own decision if they want to extend the hose or not...... My 2 cents, Steve
  18. Thanks Phil.....I'm going to look into that. Is there a gasket that will need to be repalced? Will it come with the new govenor? The tranny was a fresh rebuild before I got the car but I really don't know what was done. I don't think so but can the adjustment on the vacuum modulator be effecting this at all? The weather has been pretty bad here so I haven't been able to test much. On the module should it be turned in or out for performance shifts? Thanks again and welcome to the club!!!!!!!!!! Steve
  19. I see them in red only....anyone know where I can get them in black? Sam, I'm running the M/T "ET Street Drag Radial". Flat punch and they still spin.......lol. It's hard to "go for it" and not mash that pedal......lol Steve
  20. Oopps....lol. That's what I meant.....so does that work for the street too? Or will it create more tire spin? Steve
  21. What about using them to "pre-load" the left side only...Just enough air to fill the void but not lift the car....You know, for the occassional fun on the street....for just a little more traction..... Steve
  22. I know this post has already been hi-jacked but lets get back to the point.....lol. What do you guys think of "air bags"???? Steve
  23. Thanks Mike...I'm going to check my service manual and give that a wack.....Other than getting another one out of a different unit...because I don't have one....lol....Do you think I can get the parts from my local transmission shop... Steve
  24. The down shift switch is working because under normal driving conditions, if I step down it does down shift. My problem is up shifting from 1st to 2nd....it doesn't want to. Mike, of all things, transmissions are a mystery to me...it's that magical thing under the car that changes gears.....lol. Now I do have skills but is messing with the "governor" something that I can attempt on my own or is it something I should leave to a pro? And if so, does the transmission have to come out? I would hope not being that it sounds like you had to make more than one attempt to get yours where you wanted it.... Carl, I just posted some new pictures in the "General" forum that show the hood better. Thanks, Steve
  25. I have a 454 with a turbo 400. Under normal driving conditions the trans shift properly but at WOT it won't shift from 1st to 2nd without letting off the gas and then stomping it again? I changed the vacuum module but after reading about it, it only effects the trans under normal driving and does not play a part at WOT because there is no vacuum at that time........ Any help would be appreciated..... Thanks, Steve
