  3. Andy, Many people install the Chevelle metal inner fender wells. If it isn't a show car you can do as you wish. The main difference between the Chevelle and the Monte is the metal extensions you mentioned. The other difference will be the holes are slightly different and you may have to drill a couple of the holes or slightly enlarge the ones in the new inner fenders. This is no matter if you get the plastic or the metal. On the plastic ones I got for my Monte I had to trim some of the plastic off of the new inner fender wells because it stuck out past the moulding on th fender. Rob
  4. Are you sure it isn't the other way around. I would think the white one is the one without the moulding. Mine is held on with two small screws. The holes in the white one are way too large for the screws to screw into. The dark one is the proper size holes for the screws that hold the moulding. The dark one also shows an indentation in the hold where it appears the screws would thread into. I will be replacing my bumper this winter and will take a closer look at mine at that time. I have had mine off a couple times and would swear my fender extensions that have the moulding have the smaller holes. Rob

  6. Bob, Welcome to the First Generation Monte Carlo Club website. The chrome piece you mention was a 1970 Monte item only and not on the 71 and 72. In the above reply from Tony he states it was an early 70 model feature. Tony is partially correct. It depended on what plant the car was produced in, when they stopped installing these chromed pot metal parts were installed. My car was built in the Baltimore plant and was built in June and they were installed on my car. I did a study on this awhile back and heard from numerous members and that is what was determined from the people who responded. Rob

I am not positive but judging by how they did some things and since you don't have a hyphen between the 02 and the 09 I suspect the build date may have been September 3rd and maybe the 02 indicates the shift on that date. Again, I am guessing on this. Look on the drivers door. They originally placed a blue sticker with the build date and vin number on the drivers door near the latch. Rob
  8. Here is a suggestion on putting the pan back up. I usually don't use any gasket compound when installng a pan tranny pan gasket. Here is a suggestion on how to keep the gasket in place when installing the pan. The holes in most of the pan gaskets I have seen are slightly smaller than the bolts. If the one you get is the same, simply place the gasket onto the top of the pan and thread many of the bolts through the pan and up through the gasket. If the holes in your gasket are like most of them, this will not only hold the gasket in place but it will also hold the bolts for easy starting into the bottom of the tranny. Get all of the bolts started into the holes and then snug them all up and then finally torque them to the proper torque. Rob
  9. When at the Eastern Meet this year we had to drop Kevin's TH350 pan and change the filter. The filter and gasket come as a kit. Kevin bought a drain pan with a pour spout on it and after we put the pan back up we put two or three quarts of new fluid into his tranny and poured the old into the empty quart bottles. Every time we put in another quart into the tranny we poured the old fluid into that quart bottle. I think at the end we had put in about 5 quarts but Kevin could answer that better. As far as only 2 1/2 quarts going in, I can't answer why that would be. Rob
  10. I am wondering now if you didn't jump a tooth on the timing chain and that was the noise you heard. If the timing if off by one tooth it will cause idiling problems and starting problems.

We have a great family here and I am sure one of our members with a 71 Monte will be able to assist you with your question. I am not positive but I think the finish is a simi-gloss but if you look in the technical section of the site at the panel it looks more of a gloss black. We are having our National Eastern Meet over Memorial Day weekend in Bristol Tennessee... you should consider coming up to the event at Bristol race track to meet a few of the members. I'm not sure if they have any parts vendors but if they do it may give you a chance to find some of the treasured items you think you may need. Rob
  13. Matt, Jim is correct. I was not aware it was an emissions thing, I was told by the Chevy Dealer that it was a performance thing once the car entered third gear on the automatic transmission. It is all controlled by a pressure switch on the front passenger side of the transmission. I was told by the tranny guy at my local dealer that once the car enters high (3rd gear) the pressure switch on the tranny senses the pressure change and this causes the solenoid mounted on the intake manifold to open providing vacuum to the distributor spark control to advance the spark slightly for better performance in high gear. The pressure switch on the tranny was recently discussed here on the boards because mine started leaking recently and was leaving a nice trail of tranny fluid everywhere I went. Rob
  14. From what we know at this point, the Cruise Control option could not be ordered along with the SS Option on the first gen Monte. The reason is as you stated, they both mounted in the same place. That is not to say that a dealer wouldn't be tempted install one at the dealer location after they got it from the factory. After all, the dealers (salesmen) wanted to turn a buck and installing dealer installed options was one way they could bring in that extra cash. Rob

    Ken to the best of my knowledge it couldn't be ordered from the factory with the cruise control but we have heard of instances where dealers installed it if the customer wanted it. The cruise from the factory mounts in areas where the load leveling system mounts so it wasn't supposed to be able to be ordered from the factory. Rob
  16. Bus.... Do you have an owners manual. I am not sure but I think I have seen a picture of the button in my owners manual so if you look there it may tell you. Regarding where the wiring hooks up, I am not sure but I have a copy of the wiring diagrams I could maybe copy and mail to you. My diagrams are for the 70 Monte and I doubt they changed the connection points but you never know from one year to another. Rob
  17. Tom, The wide trim you mention was an option but I thought if the option was ordered from the factory the narrow chrome on the window felts was not also put on but I don't know that for sure. Regarding the passenger side mirror, to the best of my knowlege it was not an option but I don't want to state that as a for sure. I have one of the GM Restoration packages up in the garage with my car and will have to check the option listings to know for sure. Rob
  18. I use a lead additive in my car Monte and my Model A Ford. Both of these cars were built when lead was added to the gas. The lead in the gasoline helped with the valves by creating a slight buildup of lead on the valve seats which not only quieted the valve tap noise you may get but also provide a more positive seat of the valves in the valve seat (sort of like an o-ring seal) which provided a better seal of the valve into the seat. This better sealing of the valve into the seat allows for better compression. That is the simplest way I can explain it, I am sure someone else can do a better job. I wouldn't say I add it every fill up but I do use it. Modern day heads and even if you get your heads redone they can build them for the unleaded gas. Rob

I don't know why when they listed the options on the build sheet, not only did they list the options ordered for the car being built such as air conditioning, tilt wheel, rear defogger, etc..... they also listed many items which were standard equipment such as the hide away windshield wipers, AM radio and many other items which came standard on the Monte but that is what they did.   21. Andy, The link posted by DaveC are excellent and show what you need to know. When you talk about a door jamb I think of the vertical areas where the hinges and the latch plate are mounted. Those areas are not supposed to be painted black, they should be painted the body color. The portion that should be black is what is pictured in the links provided by DaveC. Rob

I think the ones he is talking about are the ones that were only used on the 1970 Monte and are mounted on the left and right fender to fill the area between the fender and the bumper. When installed on a car, if you look at the car from the side of the rear bumper you will see the very edge of this black rubber filling the indentation of fender. Rob
  23. You are correct, they were exclusive to the 70 Monte. Nobody reproduces these because there isn't enough demand to produce something that so few people want. It is hard to find a realy nice set of these but if you even find a marginal set you can use them. The only part that shows on them is the very edge of them. The insert has a piece of metal embeded inside of the rubber and water seeps into the metal around the screw holes and the rusting metal causes them to swell up and become damaged. Since you only see the very edge of these this damage and swelling isn't a major deal. You can still use them by screwing them on using a washer larger than the screw hole. I would suggest if you find a usable set, try to seal any area where the water can get into the metal and use stainless steel screws and washers to mount them. Rob
