  1. Jared, If there are two people that are close, as you and Jim were, we would have used a mapping program on the computer and mapped it out from door to door to see for sure and to be totally fair. I had no idea Jim had driven his car or I would have done that. Driving a 454 that far had to cost a bundle. I know that Greg and Capri were saying that they got better mileage in their truck, towing their 454, than they were getting in the car the short distance they drove it prior to going back to get it on the trailer. Rob
  2. Kevin may really be onto something here with them being quieter... That is one posibility I hadnot even thought about. Rob
  3. Jim, I didn't realize you had driven to the meet in your car. If so, how many miles was it one way... I hope we didn't give the Longest Disatance Driven award to the wrong person. Rob
  4. I really don't think it was a cost issue. they didn't seem to skimp on the Monte Carlo, espically the first few years. In the early years, the Monte was billed by Chevrolet as the Gentlemans Luxury Coupe. When they are billing something as luxury I don't think they would skimp on something like the inner felder wells. Look at it this way. The Chevelle already had an inner fender well which would work on our cars and rather than spend the money to "reinvent the wheelwell" (excuse the pun) to save money why wouldn't they have just used the one already available and being used on the chevelle. Also, if it was mostly the same thing, and the production of the chevelle was much greater than the Monte Carlo it would have been more of a savings for them to use the plastic on the chevelle than on the Monte. I suspect they may have been trying to save on weight. With the long front end on the Monte and that heavy hood I think they felt the plastic would be lighter and and with the cushy ride these Monte's had an increas in weight may mean a harder ride. I also suspect the after market steel inner wells are not as heavy as the original ones they had on the Chevelle. Of course that is just my opnion. Rob
  5. I would like to thank Capri and Scott for assisting me in getting door prizes for the Eastern Meet. We had many different companies and individuals donating items for door prizes. Below is a listing of those who contributed and helped make this event a success. I wanted to recognize these companies and request you consider them when purchasing your parts and supplies for your cars. DFW Hilton (Grand Prize Drawing for 2 free nights at any Hilton in the continental US) FatMat Sound Control (multiple gift certificates) FGMCC (multiple items) Grassi Distributing (multiple items) Harmon's Parts (multiple items) Leo Konik (multiple items) Lutty's Chevy Warehouse (multiple items) Mac Ink (multiple items) Muscle Cars Only (multiple items) Origional Parts Group (multiple items) Rob Peters (multiple items) Shiny Hiney Summit Racing Equipment (multiple items) The Parts Place (multiple items) "THIS-IZ-IT" J&D Chemical (multiple items) thanks Rob
  6. Bill, I will post them as soon as I can. They will also be in the newsletter. Thank you so much for shooting them for me. I will tell you the truth, I have not even had a chance to look at them because I have been so busy since I got home. Hopefully I will get some time to transfer them to my computer this weekend. Rob
  7. I guess the criteria is in the eye of the person judging. This year at the Eastern Meet we did peer judging so it was our members who decided it. Rob

  9. From what I understand, none of the ones produced today are quite the same as origional. I think the seam on each side is a couple inches too far toward the center. I think when the reproductions are installed the seam between the trunk and rear window are about an inch or two away from the body seam near the corner of the window and I think the origional ones would run pretty close if not right on that seam.. Rob
  10. Capri, If you go to most hardware stores you can find White Duct Tape... Just tear off a couple strips and place them over your emblems and rub the duct tape in real well to form into the numbers.... Then take an exacto blade and just cut off anything not recessed... Duct tape is a wonderfull tool, just ask Kevin Rob
  11. I think you're right Sam, good eye
  12. Sam, That you may have heard from me. I know a guy here in Pittsburgh who owns the car. It has the black painted area below the trunk like the SS and it has the black rubber strip which runs across teh rear bumper. That car also has the air ride suspension, guages, special steering wheel and many other items. Rob
  13. I have talked to many people who SWEAR that they have seen a documented SS454 Monte with a 4-speed. According to all of our information from GM, none were made. Nobody here has ever seen any documentaion of a 4 speed SS454. It is just like the people who swear they know someone who has seen one of the production 1970 factory rag tops... again, no proof Until we see absolute truth of a well documented convertible or 4 speed SS454 we will assume they don't exist. I also have seen some of the books you talk about and since it is in more than one book we assume they are stealing informaiton from each other. Rob
  14. Jagger, This is a questions which pops up now and then. According to our research here on the site, it was not a Chevrolet decision to end the production. From what we can gather it was an assembly plant to assembly plant decision. Robert (monte70car) mentions it was an early production item. I would like to clarify that a little bit. The "Full" Halo was on all early production 70's but it was NOT limited to early production. My Monte was a late production 70 Baltimore plant car and it has the "Full" Halo and others responded that they had a late in the year build date from other plants and they had the Full trim. What we have gathered from our research is that since some plants ended production of the "FULL" Halo earlier than others we feel that as they ran out of the 1970 trim late in the production year, rather than ordering a large stock of that trim and not being able to use it they simply switched to the 1971 trim which ran the vinyl material all the way up to the windshield trim. Another item which was on som 70's but disappeared later in the production year was the think chrome strip that ran along the lower portion of the front fender extension just below the head light and just above the bumper. Rob
  15. I made a mistake once... Well, not really, I thought I made a mistake once but I was mistaken. Rob
  16. Jaylene (and Mike) glad to hear everyone and the car are fine. I am not sure of a couple things. You say you found the "Nut" near the car and it was stripped but the cotter pin was intact. If the cotter pin was still intact on the ball joint, how did the nut get off of the ball joint. Please ask Mike exactly what caused it, if he can tell that is. It may be a good learning experience for others here. As stated above, it is always a good thing to go back over all the work a week or so later to insure everything is tight. Rob
  17. Great, now we are going to have to deal with Tim having a swelled head from being right ONCE.
  18. I got mine from Jim at Muscle Cars Only. www.musclecarsonly.com Just ask for Jim or Barb if you call and tell them I recommended you give them a call. Great people to work with. They are both very knowledgeable on these cars. They have several first gen's, two of them SS's Rob
  19. That is a good one... Only you could have come up with that. Rob
  20. Tim, It lasted longer than I thought it would. I think I predicted it would go before Christmas. I agree with what Mike said about flushing out EVERYTHING. I would not assume the shop which is rebuilding the tranny will do it so i would make sure you mention it to them and make sure it is in writing that they did it. Rob
  21. Doug, My car has the entire system and it is fully operational. The ones on the front fenders monitor the headlights and the turn signal/parking lights. The part mounted on the package tray had three monitor dots... two red ones for the brake/turn signal/parking lights (one left side and one right side) and one in the middle which monitored the license plate light.
  22. I think we would need a Readers Digest version.. That story could take up the entire bi-monthly publication so it is way too long for Monte Memories. Rob
  23. That price sounds pretty good to me. I would go for it. Rob
  24. I don't know if you have the origional valve covers or not. I think the SS Chevelles had chrome valve covers but the SS Monte did not. I am pretty sure the VIN will not tell us what kind of a car the engine came out of unless someone can match the number on the block to their VIN. Thanks for making the engine available to our members. As to a value of the engine, That I can't help you with but someone may be able to assist you on that one. If you haven't opened the engine to inspect the insides it makes it harder. Do you know if the engine turns over freely? If you could give information on those things it may assist a member in determining if it is of any value to anyone. Rob
  25. my1st monte, first off, welcome to the FGMCC website, glad to have you a board the boards and hope you will consider joining the club and come to the Eastern Meet near Greensburg in June. Where in Western Pa are you located. Pittsburgh here. We have Mike in New Castle and Scott near Kittanning rob
