  1. Hey Steve, that is a Factory GM Heat Sheild that was mounted under the carb to help deflect the heat from the intake manifold and keep it away from the fuel supply in order to help the carb run more smoother. As it sort of implies as Heat Sheild, If you scroll down to our Fore Sale section and look at the Triple Black 70 454ss car for sale in California right now from another member ..look real close at the engine picture just below the air cleaner on that number matching engine you will see his Factory heat sheild on the monte carlo there are 2 pics you can see it in. I really lucked out and found mine on Ebay listed as NOS in the GM envelope and scored it for $50.00 thats it... I have seen them on some small block cars as well but mainly on BB cars...I still have my GM manual handy so if you need anymore pics or info as I posted before dont hesitate to ask as well as anyone else please feel free to ask away.... any other help I can give ?? if you want the GM number off that sheild let me know and I will get it for you... Darren.
  2. Ahhhh, your Monte is a 1972!! I forgot it will have an Internal Voltage reg built into the alternator so thats what is bad as you said... I had 1970 on the brain which has an external regulator on the rad frame over by the drivers side headlight... Darren.
  3. Also forgot Jason, I hope you kept the Rear 1/4 glass windows out of the chevelle donar car..???? as the ragtop rear quarter glass is diff than the hrdtp glass.......Ragtop rear windows are longer ir wider which ever way you wanna say it...the door glass is the same though from ragtop to hardtop..And there are EXTRA bodymounts on a ragtop as well to cusion the contorting body on our cars...Monte's that is,as well as door strikers to align the doors up when shut and the roof is down they are small traingle wedges screwed onto the doors with 2 small philips screws and the wedges are 1-1/2".Rear back upper seat is also 6 inches narrower to accomidate the folding top when its hidden away...man I could go on about the diffs.....I'll let you PM me if you have any questions...Darren. Darren.
  4. Hey Jason, Good luck with the project. Gotta say your son has great taste in his choice of car...... anyhow seeing how you are no stranger to the 70 Chevelle and 70 Monte take a look inside the trunk of a 70 chevelle Convertible if you get a chance above and to the right and left of the inner wheel wells as there are hidden quarter panel braces you will need to put in the quarters of the monte as the rear quarters will kink inqards without them when the roof folds down..to much weight on that part of the body with the frame rail all folded up and reclineing. my 1970 chevelle convertible had them and also the other 2 I had over the many years. I have not looked at the pics you posted but dont also forget to box in the frame rail from just behind the tranny crossmember holes all the way back to where the box control arms bolt into the carrier on the frame too another high stress area... Darren.

Hey Jason, the boys are right they are Rivets and they are machine pressed on.. Darren.
  6. Hey Mark, Just taking a guess here if it makes sense... Our cars built back 40 odd years ago never heard of or knew anyone called Rockford Fosgate or Killer Amps. so our wiring in our cars if you are useing the factory wires to give straight power then the Gauge of the wire is not correct not only to supply power but Constant power needed to run after market stereo equipment. In line fuses off of the Voltage regulator are not large enough for a 45 amp fuse at regular running Capacity but will run at nominal use which is at idle or 20 amps the more louder the stereo is turned up the more of a draw and the amps required.. Just my 2 cents worth and as I said just a guess... Darren.
  7. YEP.. 1970-72 Chevelle will work on our Monte's as the back window glass is the exact same piece,,,, Darren.
  8. Thanks Dan for the clarity, I did look back and you are right,So i was almost on the right path..the 4spd starter will work on a Auto but not an Auto starter on a 4spd block as you mentioned the bellhousing headaches..I also dont have any shims as you mentioned....thks Darren.

Darren.
  10. Hey Mark , Bill was right they are a 4" backspace I dont what I was thinking or why I had 5 on the brain but they are 4" sorry my mistake buddy........also sending you a PM as well..
  11. Also too Bob, I know on my 4 spd block the casting holes for the starter are different too as a 4spd starter wont work on an auto engine and visa versa an auto starter wont work on a 4spd block been there and tried that which is dificult as those dam starters are heavy little suckers when you are trying to bolt them up especially when you notice the bolt holes are in a different location oh and the hole for the pivot ball for the Z bar..... Darren.
  12. Hey Dan, It does get confusing, just when you start to think you have the Letters figured out another Car gets thrown in the mix. I have done the same thing and mentioned a car and block combo and then another car pops up same block code but diff HP or 4spd or Auto... Just like that CRN for both cars and then another one that popped up for me at least would be that CRT code which is for a 4spd block to but a 454-360HP yet the 1970 corvette used the CRT code as well and it was a 4spd 454-390HP....???? strange... Darren.
  13. They did use that CRN Dan in 1970 for the chevelle as well in their SS cars it is on www.chevelles.com under engine codes as well...But it is denoted as a 4SPD block and there were NO 4 SPD 454 Monte's in 1970 Darren..just my 2 cents... 1970 Engine ID Codes Engine Transmission Carb Code Size HP Auto Manual 1 bbl 2 bbl 4 bbl CCK 250 155 TH-350 1bbl CCL 250 155 Manual 1bbl CCM 250 155 PGlide 1bbl CKO 396 375 Manual 4bbl CKP 396 375 Alum TH-400 4bbl CKQ 396 375 Manual 4bbl CKR 396/400 330 Manual 4bbl CKS 396/400 330 Manual 4bbl CKT 396 375 Manual 4bbl CKU 396 375 Manual 4bbl CNC 307 200 Manual 2bbl CND 307 200 Manual 2bbl CNE 307 200 PGlide 2bbl CNF 307 200 TH-350 2bbl CNI 350 250 Manual 2bbl CNJ 350 300 Manual 4bbl CNK 350 300 PGlide 4bbl CNM 350 250 PGlide 2bbl CRE 350 300 TH-350 4bbl CRN 454 360 Manual 4bbl CRQ 454 360 TH-400 4bbl CRR 454 450 TH-400 4bbl CRS 454 450 Alum TH-400 4bbl CRT 454 360 Manual 4bbl CRV 454 450 Manual 4bbl CTW 396 350 TH-400 4bbl CTX 396 350 Manual 4bbl CTY 396 375 TH-400 4bbl CTZ 396 350 Manual 4bbl
  14. Hey Dominic, I think unless someone corrects me here that those have a Double purpose.... Plus there are suppose to be TWO per side, the one you have shown us should stop about 2-3 inches away from where our quarter glass window does up and then there should be another at the front Pillar area about 1-2 down from the corner roof rail area.. and it holds the weatherstrip in and also is suppose the have a GM plastic coat paint in black on the tips as it acts also as a Bumper stop or Guide for our door glass to guide it or stop it from folding inwards towards the inside of the car/ sort of guides it against the weatherstrip when its in and rest against the glass in both those areas to keep it aligned... Darren.
  15. Hey Al, Jake is right it is a 7 Blade and is suppose to look like this in the picture with the clutch as well, My part number ends in 772 and it is 17-7/8ths across or 18 inches for all intense purposes I guess.... and also as well Aaron related to the Carbs. it will denote the date as he mentioned and where to find the numbers...It will also let you know in the numbers if it is for a Automatic Car or a 4spd Car too...on the right hand side on the Back Flank by the throttle linkage there sideways...this is the one out of my 454 car.. Darren.
  16. Hey Al , here is one of the AC stuff under the hood.... Bare in mind in the picture the firewall does end right behing the AC houseing unit...GM just did a cut-away veiw of the underside of the interior dash here so you can see the vents too.....If you need the Dash diagram too let me know I have that also and its really detailed and LOTS of hoses... Darren.
  17. Hey Al, welcome to the club and all the Madness and help that goes with it.....Dont forget the pics and to Anti-up on a membership as it has its benifits and loads of cool stuff to get involved in...... Bear with me here Al as I will try to up load some info for you... Plus does your 70 SS have Air Cond as that will help get the right hose diagramme that you seek or is it a non AC 454.??? Darren. 71 Monte SS

Welcome to the club Randall, another Canadian member...!! Was that Monte the one that was for sale there in Ontario about 10 months ago on Kijiji.?? Post some pics when you get a chance..doesnt matter on the shape of it now its nice to see a Monte SS in progress.. Roof is the same as a 70-72 Chevelle unless you really got creative and went convertible.....the load level parts do come up on Ebay as mentioned you just have to keep looking... Darren.
  19. I went with the smaller trio and mounted them up in the CHEVROLET name plate area that is not being used at all and doesnt require drilling to the underside of the dash, good thing I dont have AC though or else they would have to go under the dash... Darren.
  20. Hey Mike, When someone advertises a Muncie set up for sale and says everything is there for the set up. Clarity better be crystal clear as the way he says it everything is there for a complete 4spd conversion. After just doing this exact thing he better be willing to part with: Driveshaft- Muncie is diff than TH400 Cross member Ebrake center pull cable complete Z bar set up with brackets Steering column Wiring harness to adapt to 4 spd (reverse & neutral) Base plate at the end of the steering column for clutch rod Reverse lock out rod and mounting bracket Longer speedo cable 4 speed hump for the floor pan 4spd pedals with smaller brake pedal Different starter Auto is diff than std Flywheel Clutch and pressure plate set up flywheel cover diff than auto console top plate OH Yeah I forgot the tranny and shifter and rods and levers and shifter ball. now thats a complete swap over to get it done not just the tranny... Darren. PS I may have forgotten one or two pieces.....
  21. Hey thanh, The Chevelle just got the 454 rebuilt and is 420hp and still had the breakin oil in the car and had the same symptons as you but also had a Fram PH30 oil filter on it with 5psi. phoned Vaughn and asked for help and the engine shop that did the 454 and both said for the love of god shut the car off your filter has folded in and no oil pressure. I was told to go with a WIX filter which has a tinned liner throughout the filter and paper lined too. sure enough the Fram filter came off and it had almost sucked itself inside out looking inside all the paper linning had folded and rolled up and blocked the flow, I dumped the oil and put in 20w50 with a bottle on Zink and a new Wix filter and bingo 80psi all the time and put on 200 miles on Saturday and 90 degrees out and zero problems still holding 80lbs at idle the lowest it ever dropped to was 75-80....just my input and feedback thats all. Darren.
  22. Hey Scott, here is a set of BB Brackets for your A/C set up on Ebaymotors....the number is 190580299572 and is the cheapest price I have seen for the whole set like this they usually go for $200... Darren.

    Motor Mounts

Hey Scott, I have a 70 date coded LS-5 out of a 70 vette in the Chevelle and just had it redone and a bunch of goodies added and instead of a factory 390hp it is now around 420-430 and I am running Factory Motor mounts that are brand new and are made in the USA but I managed to find them up here in Canada and have Zero vibration other than at the back tires...ahahahaha..
  24. Hey Steve, see if you can follow me here as it may not be an educated guess but a theory here. The rubber around the lead wire inside the Spark plug wires is a Composite rubber such as our car tires. So like they say the harder the compound of the rubber tire the longer they last on regular driveing and the softer the compound the faster they wear. Based on that and that rubber does Not conduct electricity I would guess the compound on the rubber that surrounds the inner lead would be Stiff and new almost restricting the loss of power through the lead wire delivering a straight conduct of power cause its held tight wrapped. But with the heat from the headers its has made the compound of the rubber now Far softer and not gripping tight around the lead wire inside and is too soft,so the current still travels but it is restricted cause the wire is expanding with current and heat so delivering less power and performance. So new wires may still not be out of the question with no visual damage there is still damage to the compound of the rubber and performance is lost........Just my 2 cents worth if any of that makes sence and if someone else chimes in and says I'm looseing my marbles I'll leave you with that guess.. Darren.
