  1. Just thought I would share a list I found surfing late last night....really late...Darren. SS Monte Carlos were built in 1970 and 1971. No SS Monte Carlos were built in 1972. The only way to get the SS was with a 454 (LS5 only). Note that in 1972 you could get a 454 Monte Carlo - without the SS option. (W-CODE). No 4-speed 454 Monte Carlos were built ! And no 4-speed 1972 Monte Carlos were built with any engine. Here are some production totals for the rarer Monte Carlos: 1970 350/Powerglide: 7,507 cars (L65 2-bbl and L48 4-bbl / M35) 1970 350/3-speed manual: 545 cars (all were L65 2-bbl) 1970 350/4-speed: 935 cars (L65 2-bbl and L48 4-bbl / M20) 1970 400/4-speed: 123 cars (all were LF6 2-bbl 400 small-block / M20) 1970 400/TH-350: 16,472 cars (all were LF6 2-bbl 400 small-block / M38) 1970 402/4-speed: 493 cars (all were LS3/M20) 1970 402/TH-400: 6,963 cars (all were LS3/M40) 1970 SS-454/TH-400: 3,823 cars (all were LS5/M40) 1971 350/Powerglide: 2,056 cars (all were L65 2-bbl / M35) 1971 350/3-speed manual: 280 cars (all were L65/M11) 1971 350/4-speed: 227 cars (L65 2-bbl and L48 4-bbl / M20) 1971 402/4-speed: 122 cars (all were LS3/M20) 1971 402/TH-400: 8,511 cars (all were LS3/M40) 1971 SS-454/TH-400: 1,919 cars (all were LS5) 1972 350/Powerglide: 576 cars (all were L65 2-bbl / M35) 1972 350/3-speed manual: 342 cars (all were L65/M11) 1972 402/TH-400: 9,959 cars (all were LS3/M40) 1972 454/TH400: 1,268 cars (all were LS5/M40)
  2. Sometimes you will find at the shows guy are always trying to figure out weather your car is a real SS or not. The build sheet helps of course, but when you start seeing options on a car that dont have it on the build sheet the second guessing starts on weather the car is even a reall SS or not. Yes some SS come come loaded but I had a 70 Chevelle SS that was plain jane and the build sheet to show it but I loaded it up with fiber optics and PW,PDL,Ptrunk,Tilt,Cruise, buckets, and the whole nine yards and had an appraiser say it lessoned the value as the paperwork showed otherwise. Just a note as to what happened to me thats all...If your 71 SS doesnt have a build sheet...Have at it... PS...If you need the exact location on the Fiber optics let me know as I have a GM Book that shows both locations in 1970 on the Monte and Chevelle in all the measurements and pictures.....Darren.
  3. Hey Rodney, I have seen a 1970 El-camino 3 speed on the floor with buckets and No console and had the square hump and a White shifter ball and a 3spd pattern on it. Muncie or not I cant remember but I would guess it was a Saginaw tranny.. Darren.
  4. Hey Jim,When you say those numbers are by the coil and distributor are you meaning on the backside of the engine block or on top by the carb ?? as the Intake will have a date on it too just infront of the coil and behind the carb... Yeah Kevin is right that first Number should be a letter and it would be a "T" as Kevin and I are both running LS-5's and thats what is there and all the others too. Good one Sam and Kevin you nailed it pretty good but one last 2 cents worth....That CRN is an Automatic Block number..haha. as a 4spd block will have a different LS-5 code..... Darren.
  5. I am doing a full auto to 4spd conversion on my 70 chevelle 454 car and have seen a monte bb car in a 4 spd 70 as well ...you would be surprised how many differences there are... My Chevelle/Monte Carlo Manual does show a lot of picture diff between the chevelle and Monte and does show both those brackets that are seen above with 2 diff part numbers from GM and also Reverse lock out rod set ups too. The Manual has full visual drawn pictures with whole front end shots of a 70 chevelle and a 70 Monte Carlo....Maybe Vaughn can churp in here too seeing how he has a bb 4spd car too in a 71 for his input....Darren.
  6. Hey Chad, the boys that have mentioned it were right the inside bodymounts were used for Convertibles as well as the outside ones....I have had 3 1970 chevelle convertibles and they used the inside mounts as well as the outside both in the small block one I had and the two BB cars. My 1970 454 4spd Chevelle SS has the 4 holes but only uses the outside two and my 72 monte small block car has the 4 holes and also uses the 2 outside only. and yes in the 1970 they did show a monte convertible in the owners manual but sad to say it never came to pass and they would have used the inside ones too I am sure seeing how the chevelle/ monte are twins in a lot of ways... Darren.
  7. ask CRAZY DAVE.....he will help his chevelle launches real good if you have read his past threads...331's for highway driving hands down, for strip and top end stuff 373 or 411's...
  8. Hey Jim , couldnt you snag a rear from a 99 Suburban or Escalade that would have a posi in it already that could bolt in a whole rear end into the 99 Tahoe to be quicker..??? you said any input right...as we swap 10's and 12bolt rear posi's out of our chevelle's and monte's......Darren.
  9. Out of that 1919 did that include the Canadian Built 71 Monte SS that are running around up here and state-side as well...????? and yes if they made guessing 2000 LS-6 Chevelles for arguement sake why are there still 10,000 left driving out there today...????hmmmm.
  10. Hey Charlie, It is always worth the effort...Thats what it is all about, haveing a great time with these first Gen Monte's and especially if your car had it to begin with which it should have done being a SS454 Car and that would be a Factory Option rather than Dealer Installed...As mentioned your car looks awesome and is worth the effort...you could find the parts and install them and put a newer updated set of air shocks in the back and fill them off a valve and have the best of both set ups as the factory set may not work but the appearance is there as well as the higher ride height you were after with the newer shocks in back........just my 2 cents worth.....Darren.
  11. That looks great Doug, An A/C dash....oh boy...If I had known I could have given a different run through on removal...sorry about that....Let me know how the Maplight Mirror and Rear Defrost work out for you if not I have a spare rear view maplight mirror and wireing and also a Defrost motor and dash switch with bezel too if needed...Plus I have a full GM wirng and hose Diagrame for A/C cars 70-72 to show where they all go as well....Once again looks great Doug..............Darren,
  12. Hey Gman, Steve is right the gap is way too much for standard wheel spacers and longer 7/16 studs wont work either,I would go with Bob's suggestion of Wheel adapters they bolt onto your standard 5 on 4 3/4 studs and space out the width you need and then relocating your 5 on 4 3/4 studa again so you can still use them for the aplication but in your case you need to change the second wheel pattern as I have the same wheel technically... I have a set 1992 Z06 vette wheels that fit on the 08 impala SS just fine but when on the 70 they need the wheel adapters bolted on and the bolt pattern on my vette wheels are 5 on 4 1/2...they do make the adapters in all sorts of offsets and bolt patterns....simply go onto ebaymotors and enter wheel adapters in the search and you can see whats out there.........Jegs or Les Swabb can get them for you but some can be costly...The ride is great but the turning is so touchy with that wide a wheel on the front...when you turn you turn like right now very quick and instantly not like standard 15x8's on a graduall turn.... If Bob has a set for sale then even better it helps you get what you need and free's Bob up of an item he no longer needs....Good both ways.....good luck....Darren.
  13. Hey Doug, First off I would unhook the battery that way nothing gets shorted out. you could change the bulbs with the cluster in from lyeing on the floor looking up on drivers side other than that there are somw things you will have to undo as you encounter them, some monte clusters or chevelles for that matter had the headlight switch grounded out by the cluster which would require 3 1/4inch screws to be removed from the wiper switch and one tail one that would go across from that and another screw located on the dash frame around the steering columb area. There will also be a black ground wire that will need undoing as well attached just to the bottom right corner of the Tach housing in a 1/4 screw too. Then undo the plug main for the power feed that plugs into cluster next to amp gauge, squeeze in ends and wiggle back forth to get loose...Dont pull as you may pull out wires going into the plug.. The speedo as you mentioned would need to be pulled ...easy access under columb when plate cover is removed and reach above columb around ignition switch area with index finger and push release collar at the bottom in towards the cluster and it should pop out an inch and then your good there....the orange wire for the clock needs too be pulled off and then remove the 1/4 inch screws across the top of cluster and around beside amp gauge and then 2 down by columb one on each side and then around again by heater switch...Last but not least the wiring harness will have arrow clips holding it attached to the top of the cluster too. needle nose pliers squeeze those out nice and then remove cluster slowly but surely watching speedo cable is undone and then you can change bulbs.A new circut board can be bought at a lot of places but I got mine at Year One......the other bulbs that are already burnt are probably due to one being burnt out or a bad ground and the other is around the amp gauge the copper circut is probably broken in that curve area at bulb.....comman in every monte and chevelle.....hopefully that covers it if not ask away and someone else will chip in as well or I will again......Good luck Doug............Darren.
  14. Yeah, thats right Sam the crossmember is different too... I also forgot the steering columb too is different...
  15. I believe it depends on the turbo 350 weather it has a 6 inch or 9 inch tailshaft to match up with the 4spd one then the driveshaft should be the same...Plus you will have to put on a manual flywheel too for the clutch assembly to join too.

    4 spd to TH400

Yes Steve, I was talking about the Chevelle. I had no intent to get hopes up it just didnt dawn on me at the time to mention it. I will ground out the Black wire anyhow just to close the loop and as the other guys mentioned that too. Yes there has been for years the thought of a LS-6 Monte somewhere maybe out there and Definatley in the Chevelle,But haveing an LS-5 4spd Chevelle SS there has got to be a LS-5 4spd Monte SS out there somewhere you would think?

    4 spd to TH400

Thanks Robert and Mike,I plugged in the orange for now and works fine...but cant help but wonder about the Black wire? maybe I need to ground it out on a bellhousing bolt in order to complete or close the loop.??? Darren.
  18. Hey guys need some help with the kickdown wiring..I have a 1970 that was originally a 454 m-21 4spd car,but somewhere not too long ago it was changed to a TH400 and the kickdown wiring has the typical 2 pin plug boot that goes onto the side of the tranny which was probably fine for the 4 spd.But the TH400 only has a provision for a single pin plug. The orange would be the power it needs to activate it I would assume.?? But what do I do about the Black wire????? Does it need to be looped to the orange or grounded out somewhere.???? any input would help...... PS. The car will not stay an auto for long as it will go back to a 4spd again once all the stuff is found so this is a temp fix in order to get the TH400 working fully....Darren.

  20. Hey MG, let me know if the car is from Oshawa Ontario Canada, and I will give you a hand with phone numbers up here and names to get you in contact with...GM Canada documented really well and the package is cool, the GM doc list comes on a GM letterhead with RPO numbers and the options listed for your car and lots of other stuff. One of our other Junoir members over in Nova Scotia named Danny got his 1970 Monte SS with the GM docs and info and my 70 chevelle as well. any of the local GM dealers up hear can get it done for you for around $50 as well takes 2 weeks..... Darren.
  21. They are both the same color which is black but there is a difference in the finish even though it sounds the same... The Firewall is a Semi-Flat Black and the pulley's and brackets, hinge's are a Semi-Gloss black....I believe or at least that's the way I did all three of mine, but check to see what the other feedbacks are weather they agree or not.....Darren.

    transmission

The other problem areas that could cause a fault or a bunch of faults are on the pass side of the tranny there is a vacuum pod that has a rubber hose attached to it which runs up to the intake that hose may be split or come off causing it not to go into gear properly or allowing the fliud to go thriough the internal plenum properly when the Detent cable shifts the adjustment rod inside the tranny. the bottom part of the tranny will look like a mouse maze with 5-6 check balls or ballbearings which shift around in their pocket when the fluid travels through a modulator or gouvenor (Valve Body). when the balls move it allows the fluid to travel causing pressure to build up to change gears from park thru to low 2. If your trans filter is clogged up that will not help with fluid flow either.Yes it sounds like a big brain fart but that is part of the internal probs it could have besides the detent cable needing adjusting from either the inside of the tranny or up at the side of the carb by the gas linkage on the same bracket..........? Darren
  23. Hey Guys GM Rear Axle codes are listed on www.chevelles.com go to bottom of page on the left select the year shown by two numbers 70 (chevelle) scroll down after that and you will see axle codes click on it and it gives all the 12 bolt codes and weather they are posi or not and the gear ratio too....hope this helps out.........Darren.
  24. Hey Tavis, let me know if you need any visual stuff on what the guys are helping you with there...I have a 1970 Chevelle/Monte Carlo Factory assembly Manual about 3 inches thick full of pics and RPO codes...I can scan the page and email it to you to print off so you know what the fella's are talking about.???? This book is like the library everyone up here has asked to borrow it as it has body panel gaps name plate locations and engine stuff too with all GM part numbers listed in it.....I have no problem helping out as well......just give me a shout....but dont yell...Darren.
