  1. Perhaps I missed something but this must not be a C clip type 12 bolt rear axle. For the other type of axle, after removing the four nuts holding the bearing plate to the backing plate, re-install the brake drum backwards, put three lug nuts on about 5 threads, and use the drum as a slide hammer. May not work for rusty old cars, but it's free to try it! Bruce
  2. Not this brand, but we sell flex plates as part of our trans adapter kit for old Chevy in line sixes. Tom must inspect each flex plate and rejects a very high percentage for being out of spec. He has tried different suppliers but found the base manufacturer is all the same. Bruce
  3. Super nice day in Michigan today, Friday, so I took a short drive then cleaned out the garage and backed the Monte in for the Winter. As a side note, I put gas in my 1967 Sears 7HP single stage snow blower, closed the choke, pulled ONE TIME and that old sucker fired right up! Good times. Bruce
  4. "Have you tried a 1" bore master cylinder?" What is standard M/C bore size? 7/8"? Are all three years the same from the factory? There are two manufactures, Delco Moraine and Bendix. Is a master with P/B the same as non-power? I know 70 M/C has a much larger outside body. I've always been concerned when someone replaces their old M/C with a rebuilt one, that it is, in fact, the correct one. (Here I go again talking bad about the rebuild industries) Adjusting the rear brakes on my 71 does wonders in bringing up the peddle and feel of the brakes. It takes care of the parking brake at the same time. I feel that very hard pads with a long or lifetime warranty may cause a higher amount of pedal force to stop vs. the 1970's era asbestos type pads and shoes. 5. Sunday we took a nice long ride and snapped a few pictures of it. Didn't drive by any covered bridges but did find a nice old church. Bruce Pictures last ride for 2011
  6. You may want to run a compression test prior to yanking it all out to see if you have any low cylinders. Got any oil leaks? Ft harmonic damper seal leaking a bit? There is a quick fix sleeve that's a good fix along with a new seal. After a few more ideas, you will have so many things you want to do, so be careful, things tend to snowball! Bruce
  7. Where I work, we sell rebuilt progressive two BBL carbs like the ones that came on the old Pinto. (It's a nice replacement for a old worn out 1 BBL on a small six cylinder) Every one is taken apart, checked and repaired before it leaves. Friday we had one with about a 1/8 t-spoon of rust and dirt in the bowl and the accelerator pump, check ball, was missing. As far back as 1974, I was told to NOT get a rebuilt water pump for my Monte Carlo so the rebuild industry has been spotty at best for some time now. Bruce
  8. I am lucky to still have (and use) the Quadrajet that came on my car from the factory. I have seen the terrible products that come out of the standard re-builders and will always recommend keeping what you have and getting it rebuild by a reputable shop. That being said, I would also stick with the Quadrajet. If you want to try something else, go ahead, it's your car but KEEP ALL THE OLD PARTS! Bruce
  9. I recorded the miles, something I do on each car on the first of each month. I thought about driving it to the Chevy dealership where I purchased it 40+ years ago for the Chevy 100Th. Original building now sells Toyota's, current replacement building that's only about 20 years old is part way through a total makeover expansion so it's a mess there. Perhaps not........ Bruce

Sounds great! Makes me want to flip my lid! Do it again from a 30 roll, go WOT. I love it. Bruce

    air cleaner

"I still have a difficult time starting it after a long period of sitting. Anything over 5 days or so, and I just expect to crank and crank to get her going." Same story with mine. If I (or anyone here) would install an electric fuel pump, I would turn the key to the on position, wait a few seconds, set the choke (by pushing the accelerator pedal to the floor) and then it would fire right up. Perhaps a cool idea, record the sound we are all talking about for a U-Tube video. Share the fun, but don't get a ticket. Bruce
  13. Steve, Yes, cruise control. I added it about 24 years ago. Bruce
  14. Here is the entire album, hope it helps. 70 may be different than 71. 71 350 Quadrajet
  15. My OEM 71 Quadrajet has a PCV valve hose hooked to a vacuum fitting like you are describing. Here is a picture. Bruce 1971 Quadrajet on a 350
  16. I found this: gas gauge float problem
  17. Improperly working or non working fuel gauge is an area that get's lot's of attention on this forum. Someone did a very nice job of detailing the resistance of a full tank and resistance of an empty tank. I also recall the "float issue" where some floats became saturated and will no longer float as high with a full tank. Poor ground can and does also cause many issues. Try searching and you should come across these messages. I'll also take a look and post what I find. Good area for a tech article! Bruce
  18. My 71 didn't have them but I recall the GM logo being on the door. Bruce
  19. I used someone else to replace the unit with a quartz movement who then shipped it to a third party who did the work and shipped it to me. Over two years now and works great! Here is a link with several pictures of my 71 clock removed and a few tips I hope will help you. It isn't a "how to remove your dash" procedure but may be useful. Bruce Heater core replacement 71 NO A/C + other dash pictures
  20. I was wondering if and how I can post my Excel spread sheet that could then be downloaded by our readers to use? It is a RPM / MPH calculator that uses tire size, transmission and axle ratios to figure MPH @ RPM. My sheet uses ideas from others I have used with a comparative "old vs. new" feature. Bruce
  21. What trans? If it has a newer Overdrive 200 4R or 700 R4, the lock up torque converter may not be unlocking? Bruce
  22. Scott, If you have power brakes, here is a quick test to see if your problem could be related to a vacuum leak (rare) in the brake booster. To accomplish this. you need a properly working parking brake. If you have never used it, be careful because it may be frozen and won't release. If it's good then apply the parking brake then put it into D and see how it idles. Then apply the foot brake and see if it gets worse. If it does, you probably have a vacuum leak in the power brake booster. If it is the same, set the idle up a bit higher and start looking for other vacuum leaks on hoses. Bruce
  23. I use Chrome and have for several years now with no issues. I also like G-Mail. Bruce
  24. Sorry, I can't help with a fix but this has got to be one of the strangest problems I have ever heard of. PLEASE let us know what the fix is when you find out. Bruce
  25. Big difference! I believe Chevrolet didn't use any air cleaner decal for engine size in 1972. Big cost savings? Bruce
