  1. i was told by a local mechanic never use the harmonic balancer to lift the engine as that can damage the balancer. I have always used a big block of wood under the oil pan with a floor jack. I have never had a problem but did crack my distributor cap once, now I remove the cap from the distributor before raising the motor
  2. Those were only on a 70 Monte and then not even all of them had those

Jegs did not have the pushrods in stock Summit did but decided against a four hour drive for $100 worth of parts so they are being shipped

Jamey came up today and we have gotten the pushrods figured out that they need to be 7.266" long which means the Comp Cams 7609-16 are going to work. I did take our adjustable pushrod into my local guru and he measured and he got a 7.275 on his caliper and recommended I go with the above. So a trip to Jegs or Summit is probably in the works for tomrrow

Talked to our best local engine guru this week and he looked in his records and my application will most likely need 7.300 pushrods but he also highly recommended doing a little testing with an adjustable push rod. My son in-law Jamey will be here tomorrow and I should know what I need very soon. He is bringing an adjustable rod
  9. That is what I just put in my 2013 pickup when the original battery crapped out in January. I got one of the new fangled gel batteries and it really cranks that ole 5.3 like a timex
  10. I am glad you tried but don't even wanted to think about trying it

  12. It could also be a bad Ignition switch. Years ago we had Rick Eickenfels come to Hiawassee GA meet and his switch failed. It would start and when he let off of the key it died. A couple of the copper contacts had fallen over or worn and it did not make contact with the run terminals in the switch. I disassembled the switch and showed him what happened. T he reason I know this was I built those switches for a few years.

5/16” diameter, present length is 7.193 my new heads have valves which are .115 taller than original valve height.

I have never heard of lash caps before. After looking at them with my new valves being .115 taller wouldn't lash caps make them even taller and to me that throws the geometry off even further?

Everything is fitting just fine now to figure out what pushrods to use. Talked to Summit the other day and the only thing they had is a 3/16" pushrod was 7.325 which will probably work but need to do more digging into all of this to make sure I don't screw up a great setup. These will be .132 longer than what I have but the present ones are .115 short of what I have to be of the correct geometry of what was on the engine making them .017 longer than what I think I need. I need to find me an local engine guru and have a discussion. My son in-law just had his appendix removed so he is out of commission for a few weeks but he does have an adjustable push rod to see what is exactly needed. He is the mechanic that I am not lol

Doing a little test fitting today. Home because I tested positive for the virus so a few days of isolation and nothing else to do. Also did some checking last night and found my new valves are .115 taller than the stock heads. Called summit and the do not have any push rods that are .115 longer than what I have but do have some that are .132 longer. Boy we are having fun NOW. NOT

They have to have those connecters to keep everything lined up and not hit any vital organs. I was somewhat surprised when I first seen them also but I knew something was up when I saw the parts list after the last rebuild and it showed 1921485 pushrods out of a Vortec V6

  20. I am one of those who used a bicycle inner tube and it has been on the car for 10 years. This is what is holding the chrome strip to the window and them the rubber strip is not held into the chrome by anything but a small tab on the rubber strip. That way they can be removed at a later date without any problem. Window urethane is a real pain in the arse to get removed.

Found all rings so far. I would like to see one of those seals fresh out of the box

Got the other head off after fighting the back header bolt for an hour. It will be somewhat easier as I massaged the head a little LOL. Here is a photo of the seal off of the intake valve for no 2. I am not to adept at getting close ups with my I Phone as this shows but the top of that seal is mangled almost beyond recognition.

Here are some photos of why this motor was using oil. Broken inner valve spring cut the seal. Also found four other broken inner springs on this head now to remove the other head and see how bad that side is. Ordered ProMaxx Series One SBC 183 heads with 183cc intake runner and 72cc combustion chamber. Present heads are 180 runner with 76 chamber. My son in-law commutated new compression should be around 9.3 to 1. Will be able to run 87 octane gas and oil using being nil. Should have parts by this weekend. Now out to the garage and remove the other head
